My first post :) I been looking for a high spec laptop for uni for a while now. Loads cheaper than if you bought off high street. Heres what is inc. in this model:

Processor: i7-740 QM
Cashe: 6MB (think L3?)
HD: 500GB @7200rpm
Graphics card: 3GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 445M Graphics Card
Screen res: 1600x900 17"
RAM 4GB 2x2GB (supports 16GB DDR3)

Original price: £1028 but Dell have offer of £174 off. Make sure you inc. the backup disc £4.50. They used to inc. this for free but not any more.

****************
As the original price was over £949 the 10% discount code MC946ZXDQ17XV7 works :)

Also delivery is free (£20) until the 3/11/10
*************************

You also get included :
-Lojack® for Laptops theft recovery and identity protection 1yr licence
-McAfee antivirus 15mth subscription

if you fancy, you can also inc. a Internal DVB-T TvTuner £27 (inc. 10% discount)

Students: This works out cheaper than going through their discount site, as it doesn't qualify for cash back.

Really like the look of the new XPS line. Shame they are not offering the full hd screen, and backlit keyboard like on the XPS 15.

If you wanted all the extras your probably better off with the HP ENVY 17, £1001 from the HP Student store (£300 off), i7, full hd screen, blu-ray, better build quality, backlit keyboard, ati 5850 graphics with eyeinifinity etc!

Do you have the internet? You'll never guess what comes up if you type "hp student store" in to, for example, Google.

From £1300, to £1001 in the student store. The graphics are very high end, with 1GB of GDDR5 memory, and rated much higher than 445m (even with 3gb of gddr3 memory). It can power 3 external monitors with ati eyeinfinity.

If your looking for a high end laptop with all the extras (full hd screen, blu-ray, backlit keyboard, high end graphics) the envy 17 is a superb buy. It also comes with a free next day support 2 year warranty.

I bought the xps 16 with the full HD screen and 4GB of RAM for £805 about a month ago. Similar specs but the Processor was i7 720 and the graphics card was 545v with 1GB dedicated mem. Only reason why i returned it was because it was too heavy for me. ( I have a 17" Macbook pro ann the d i wanted one lighter than this) so i think im going to go for the HP envy 14 for same price (unless anyone can suggest another laptop? :) ) Yes its a lower spec than the dell but its also 1Kg ligher than the Dell. One thing il miss though is that gorgeous screen. It was so bright i had it on the lowest setting most of the time!

I only just discovered the HP Student discount too :) I though it would be a long process to set up but if you sign up with your Student email address, its more or less instant. Other good thing is they have an offer atm on some laptops where you get Microsoft office for free and free next day delivery. As dells laptops are shipped in from China, it takes about 1-2 weeks.

hmmm seems that both envy 17 models have been removed from the student store, was trying to find a cached copy of the page but I can't. The model I purchased (17-1050ea) is sold out, and isn't appearing on either hp store.

:( the envy 14 i was looking at is gone too

A couple of things to say on this particular new XPS 17 deal...

First, this particular configuration with the i7 & the 445M is a big power consumer. Expect on occasions to have this thing running hot or have the cooling fans running flat out. Remember there's no Optimus option with the i7.

Second, if I was going for the 445M, I'd want a full 1080p 17" screen to make best use of the card. Right now this isn't an option. I suspect it will be an £80 add-on at point in the future (as it was for the Studio 17). For the 1600 x 900 screen, the 435M is probably more than enough.

Third, other than 'just wanting the fastest', who really needs an i7 processor??? The lesser i3-370M is probably more than enough processing power for any application. Why bother having a Ferrari engine in your car when the speed limit's 70 mph? I just doesn't make sense to me.

IMHO, the better deal is to go for the i3-370M, 3GB RAM, 500 GB 7200 rpm HDD, Nvidia 435M deal for £649 with free delivery (see link below).

http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/Dell-Laptops/xps-17/pd.aspx?refid=xps-17&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756&acd=7a5ada6864fbd5f14905fc8fbfa5e565

As well as being cheaper, this thing consumes less power and has Optimus enabled (I think?) for real cool running. You could put what you save towards buying a Dell 3 year warranty or getting McAfee for 3 years.

Yes they are heavy beasts - but Dell published the weight so I knew what I was buying... still I'm sure your return was a bargain for someone like me on Dell Outlet ;)
