Why cold? I'm looking for a high-end laptop to replace my aging desktop.

DON'T UPGRADE the DVD drive to Blu-ray, instead look out for one of these and swap it yourself to save another £70:

Great laptop, own one myself. SSD is well worth installing (separately, not dell prices unless on the Outlet)

Tempting. Could do with a replacement to my 3 year old MSI Gaming laptop. How's the GPU stack up against the competition in this model?

Promised myself I wouldnt bother with a 17 inch laptop again though...

Graphics are pretty good with the 555m GT, overclocks pretty well. I play F1 2012 on it with no issue as well as pCars a beta game.

Only thing I'd change on mine is upgrading wlan card to one supporting 5ghz as it's a pig to change but I got mine from the Outlet so had no choice.

This thread has pretty much all the info you could ever need > http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/562138-dell-xps-17-l702x-thread.html

Anyone owned a dell high end laptop for over 2 years? Could you comment on how the build quality etc is. I've had a couple of the lower models and they don't last, screen goes flimsy, buttons come off etc so just wanted to know if the build quality is better on the more expensive models.

I've used Dell Latitude for work over many years with no build issues. I have a 2 year old Dell Studio XPS which looks just as good as the day i bought it. My new XPS 15 looks and feels as if it is built to a much poorer standard, but still better than the HP or Acer's I've owned.

Just a word of warning the FHD WLED AG screen has a very pronounced anti-glare coating; I'd strongly recommend not buying unless you see it first or are prepared to return under DSR.
The AG screen has remarkably good anti-glare properties and great viewing angles but is a 'marmite' choice as you'll either love it or hate it; I've always been used to anti-glare screens on my work laptops; but the extreme coating on this screen and the way it made images shimmer/blur made it was unusable for me.

I think this deal has 2x500GB drives so you'd have to lose the optical drive or one 500GB in order to install the SSD...

P.S. How do you find the AG screen?

I don't have the AG screen, I have the glossy one and love it, VERY bright when on max brightness. As above many people don't like the AG screen as it looks "grainy"

If you are lucky you can find XPS 17 with the FHD 3D TL screen for this price or even less on Dell outlet; I'd definitely recommend that screen over the AG.

This deal does have the 9 cell battery which I'd say is a must have especially as this machine has two HDD.

I got the following almost a year ago off Dell outlet:

XPS L702X, I7-2720QM, 1080p LED AG (I have a window directly behind my desk so this was a must), Backlit Keyboard, 750gb HDD, 8gb RAM, 3gb NVIDIA 555m (brilliantly overclockable), top wifi n/b/g/bluetooth card (can't remember which one it exactly is), 9 cell battery, TV in card (wasn't supposed to include it but it did) for £650 and now it has Blu-ray for an extra £25...BARGAIN!!!

I have the i7 15" version of this and it's fantastic! Been using it for the last 6months with very few issues.

The only 2 things I'd fault it on is the battery life with the 6cell is decent but not great when doing any media applications and the track pad when starting up can some times go haywire for the first minute after booting up.

But function wise I can't fault it

I used an XPS 17 for a couple of weeks and have the XPS 15; although the machines are similar they aren't comparable in some important aspects.
On the XPS 15 the keyboard is firm and responsive (on the XPS 17 the non-backlit version was very soft and bouncy); the 1080p screen on the XPS 15 is highly reflective, but fantastic, and as I explained above the XPS 17 1080p AG screen is very different.

This deal has the 9-cell battery and I've not experienced any problems with the track-pad on either the XPS 17 or XPS 15.

I think to get the quidco 6% you have to use the 10% off voucher code they give you, if you use the one in the first post they could knock your cashback back

These are very nice units. There is more good news, if you google, you'll find that they can take 2x8GB sticks (cost approx £85ish) to make a 16GB PC.
The chassis comes with all the parts to add the second HD.
The core system is powerful, and the GT555 is a pretty good mid range gfx card.
    Basically awesome :)

One caveat - DO NOT be tempted to cut corners and take the 1600x900 screens on models on the dell /outlet - these screens are appalling. Stick to a 1920x1080 screen and you'll be gold.

I've got this with the 3d screen, 3 year warranty and 16gb ram and it's a fantastic bit of kit. It's played all the games i've tried at max settings without any issues.

Just be aware it's noisy under load as the fans blast away like mad when gaming as that gpu gets hot under the front left of the keyboard which is why I took the 3 year warranty (bought through outlet and so warranty was cheaper than buying new).

RAM is disproportionate to the processor, who gives a shi* if its i7 or i25, its only 2.2ghz hahaha! combine that with 8gig ram and your system will be as inefficient as a chocolate frying pan
