fyi You can configure this same spec machine without the blu ray for £827.11 (plus quidco) if you don't want the blu ray using the N01X5303 code.

Cheap upgrade for the blu ray though!

Also i understand the 8600 M GT is DDR3 on these XPS models which is better than the DR2 version.

What's the advantage of a XPS over say a Vaio? I hear XPS are awesome but for £889.99 + 4% quidco you can get this Vaio which has a 300GB HD and Blu-ray writer drive:

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3479930/Sony-Vaio-FZ21Z-Core-2-Duo-T7500-2-2-GHz-2GB-300GB-15-4-Blu-Ray-Vista-Home-Premium-Laptop-Notebook/Product.html

The rest of the specs look identical to this model. If I am missing something please let me know if not I think I will get the Vaio.

That Sony has a slightly weaker graphics card. If you like your high end gaming it will make some difference. The 8600 GS is not quite as good as the 8600 GT DDR2 or DDR3.

Have a look here:

Thanks for that, so other than for gamers the Vaio is better? I use my consoles for games and computer for business.

Cheers

Well if you prefer Sony then yes i guess it is as good if not better - doesn't have a slot loading drive but doubt this is much of a down point and the webcam is not 2 mp but 1.3 but other than taht it's a good deal - when it's in stock that is!

Edit: Also the Hard drive is a slower speed - 4200 rpm on the Sony.

Just had a quick thought, does the Dell have HDMI out? With a blu-ray drive that is an absolute must! I am tempted to get either the Dell or this sony which is better matched than the last one I posted:

EDIT: Just found that Dell do have HDMI so my decision is made harder again :(

RE GDDR3

I've asked three different people at dell and they say its the ddr2 version on the xps.

However, most of em dont know what theyre talking about; I have a feeling they say ddr2 because the system memory says ddr2.

on another note, dell call centre staff are some of the worst I've ever experienced.
