Good price for this laptop. Much better build quality and more importantly for me battery life (esp with the 9 cell) than any acer. hot from me and will hopefully order later today - quidco aswell

Lol don't compare a Dell XPS with HP or ACER:thumbsup:

excellent price for this laptop, also try www.itcsales.co.uk as there are some great deals for many laptops on there.
Much better than acer with UK support if you get an XPS. Again another post that is hot as it is a good deal and again it gets put down by those who need to think what this site is all about.
Hot Deals, not comparing apples to pears......................................

What makes you think a 17inch is better? I need it fairly portable and a 17inch would be too big for me. I'm happy to pay another £100 for a higher quality machine
#6
I voted hot, these are great laptops and really we should not be comparing supermarket specials with them.

why not? its what we do for houses , you can compare a house to a bungalow some have adv some have disdvantages, also for cars, i will do it for laptops.

just because there is a badge on the front that says XPS doesnt make any difference its the parts inside !!

Have u ever use a Dell XPS??
thats Acer review

Price and quality are different things though and that’s ignoring the fact that 17” laptops are much bigger and heavier than this Dell and are hardly even portable.

got to agree with garbage, there are better deals out there

having owned an ACER and now owning an XPS M1530 , its like comparing a lada to a rolls royce

acer are really poor laptops in comparison, but as they say , you get what you pay for.

17" laptops are a joke, if youve ever owned one , you'll realise just how portable they really are lol.
Also the DELL premium warranty is better than ACER's too, the dell one means they come to you house or place of work to fix it, something only a few companies do.It can be extended as well for a small fee.

So how much would you be looking at for this spec with bluray?
#13
I bought one of these just over a year ago, very poor build quality, very poor service from Dell, despite having premium on site support they wanted me to take it to pieces to fix a fault.
The cables were routed incorrectly under the keyboard causing a large bulge, it must have been quality inspected by a man with a dog and a white stick.

Be warned it also has a dreadful shiny screen making it virtually unusable in anything but a darkened room.
#14
This is the best comparison I can find on Currys website:

http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1964928994.1237147440@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccddadegkdjifhicflgceggdhhmdfhj.0&page=Product&sku=723600#productInformationSection

This Dell has an Nvidia Geforce Go 8600M wheras the HP has a crummy integrated intel.

This more than makes up for the price difference, the dell is also better made and IMO, has better CS.

The quality on this is superb and doesn't compare with HP/Acer's cheapo models.

I did have a small problem with mine but the Dell engineer came out next day and fixed it there and then, no sending it to Hong Kong for me :)

You can keep your Dell! oh and you may want to read up on the many problems people are having with nVidia GPUs too before you make a purchase...

The XPS is Dells top of the range unit, Though you may find the same or better spec at the same price, it will not be as high quality, example a a Fiat may have the same equipment level as a BMW .
#20
Let's compare a BMW with a Kia.

Let's now compare a Dell XPS with an Acer.

You see where I am going here? Compare apples with apples next time.

i said blu ray OR 17 inch OR better graphics processor would be better FOR ME.

No you didn't, you made it as a general statement.

Anyway, you're wrong about this deal, the Dell XPS range are terrific and at just over £500 this is a very good deal. True, if you needed blu ray or a bigger screen for this budget then yes, other lappies are available with a variety of pros and cons, but you were way over the top saying this was 'terrible' and the original price was 'obscene'.

If you post knee jerk one line comments slamming a product don't take the hump when you get criticised by others.
#22
dcx_badass
Is it the hinge on the right hand side? Our Latiture at work has that, the plastic pops off everytime you open or close it.

Yep thats the one! :)

Dont get me wrong, Dells look ok, they perform ok, but they arent anything special.

All this comparing BMWs to bloody Fiats is all very well and good, but there are a lot of people out there who own Fiats and get from A to B everytime and love their cars, remember that...and remember how much money they save by having the Fiat. Cheapest isnt always best I know, but for a lot of people its the only option they have :whistling:
#23
garbage456
if this had a blu ray or was 17 inch or had a x700 graphics card, then this would be good, to think this is normally £699 is obscene

One of the main reasons I believe even free speech, even for horrible parties like the BNP, is because I honestly believe that if someone comes out and says something stupid, or offensive, or offensively stupid, the vast majority of us all KNOW it's stupid or offensive, or offensively stupid.

Welcome to the right side of my theory.

Then I don't believe they would be trying to compare an Acer Laptop with Blu Ray, 17" screen yada yada yada as they wouldn't require half of these features.

Each to their own, personally I don't rate Dells that highly and that's down to personal/colleague experience with them. Our company purchases Dells as standard for all employees due to policy, but wherever possible people will attempt to gain favour and get one by a different manufacturer due to the bad experiences they've have with their previous Dell....

The refurbed Acer Ive just bought, upon using it for 3 days, is fantastic. Whether ill be saying that in 6 months time i dont know but thats the risk you take with any laptop, regardless of manufacturer.

Im not saying Acer are fantastic, im just saying Dell arent fantastic either
#26
Fantastic price for a fantastic machine. I've owned laptops from pretty much every major manufacturer you can think of, and the XPS M1530 I bought last year is by far the best I've ever owned in terms of build quality and reliability.
#27
Hinges breaking on laptops seems to be a hit and miss thing no matter who makes it, I'm typing this on a Acer Travelmate with a bead of glue from my glue gun right along the front and the back to hold it up as both hinges have bust right off, and only about 18 months old.
#28
To be honest your going for the brand name... that ain't a good laptop for the money, its just an average price. I paid around 600 and got the hp dv7-1000ea which has a better processor, bigger screen (of course if you want that which I did), blu ray, far better graphics card, bigger hard drive, more RAM, so bascially everything for £100 more? just to let people know there are far better deals out there if you look hard enough. I love my laptop and the build quality of mine is fantastic. Don't be put of the new range of HP's by Dell lovers, don't get me wrong when I was looking I was only looking for Dell, Sony or HP but the acer one's weren't as bad as people make out.

The machines are not even comparable.

You're comparing 9200 to 8600MGT, T5800 to T6400, not to mention the HD size and the mainboard.

This is what companies like curries do to sell inferior machines. People think that a 2 GHZ core to duo is the same whether its a T5 series or a T9300. They also think "256MB dedicated graphics" is indicative of the GPU performance, and often don't even list the exact GPU Anywhere !

People buy these machines, and then complain that they're slower than they expected.

It's like saying an E46 BMW M3 is too expensive, because you can buy a Chrysler with a 3.2L engine, 4 wheels and a windscreen for much less

P.S. RAM IS memory.

Is this guy serious? I think he's being serious.

If you want an Acer you can get one for cheaper. But it'll be heavier, not have such good build quality, probably be larger in size, less battery life, and poorer quality components and screen.

I know as I had an Acer Aspire 5052 (which my brother now has) and within 6 months upgraded to my Dell XPS M1330.

The Dell is a great quality piece of kit. There's one fault which has been mentioned and that is the screen hinge gets a little loose. It's doesn't really affect me, I just find it annoying as I'd prefer it tighter.

The price is good but not great. I got my M1330 with virtually the same spec for £525 around 7 months ago.
#31
last June, i've grabbed the DELL M1530 as
T9300+3GB+320GB+WUXGA
which cost me 750 pounds.
Now, for the same, i would need to pay 830.
Even considering the Pound/Dollar rate,
it's not that good deal.
#32
Garbage talks garbage.
As for the "it was cheaper last summer", I think you're missing something here and that's the fact that this country is in recession. The GDP is weaker against many other currencies so why can't you see the reason behind that?
#33
For £200 more you could get the updated white 13" macbook and avoid giving any money to micro$oft. I know the topic of apple computers does polarize opinion, but I love mine.
#34
Gaaaaaaaaaaaah, why are you even mentioning something that's out of this one's price range?
Also, £929.00 - £521.09 does not equal £200. I guess the next person will mention something not even related to this deal.
#35
Think everone's missing the point, the 15.4 " XPS laptops are being cleared by Dell, this model has been out for about 15 months! Good price for a current XPS, not so good for this model, new XPS Studio 16 starts @ £799, would prefer to spend a little extra for future proofing personally.
#36
i loled at stapsell's comment, i have to say. people are so focused on not giving money to "micro$oft" but thats such a cliche its sad. ohhh look, bill gates is so rich and all. he's also one of the largest philantropic figures with some of the largest donations and contributions to charity. the £1000 people like stapsell dish out for less hardware but an arguably better OS (not tested by the masses) goes straight towards the mclaren SLR driven by the apple founder, and to his medical bills.
#37
wont vote either way, but leaning towards hot.

there was a better deal on XPS 2 weeks ago but its now expired.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/349133/dell-xps-m1530-laptop-15-4-2-40-ghz/
#38
Anybody who thinks Acer's are good build quality does not know what good build quality is! Acer laptops are cheaply built and to say they are better than a Dell XPS just highlights how little they know about quality.

Though i don't think this is a 'Hot' deal is not a cold one either. It truly is a superb machine though.
#39
just a note to all it has the old centrino technology too... thats the first thing that would put me off if I'm going to pay this much for a laptop. everything on this laptop is average for a slightly over average price if you ask me. Keep your money in your pocket and look around for a better deal if you ask me... haven't voted either way.

This Dell would grind the Apple into the dirt every day of the week in terms of performance, and would leave you with £200 change too. Plus, it won't melt like the Apple will.

As for the Microsoft comment, the money has already been given to Microsoft by Dell for the bulk OEM licenses. If you refuse even to dirty your hands with Windows, you can request Linux instead.
