Not a particularly good spec for over £1000. I've seen basic i7 PCs for around £500 - an SSD and decent GPU shouldn't bump it up this much.

Also, new CPUs are due this month so I'd wait.

Wow if you had over a grand to spend on a computer... would you really buy a Dell....

not bad spec in my opinion, but dell are krud.

For the spec it's an overpriced pc...

Graphics card is weak, slower than a 6850.

    Overpriced for the spec.

Chillblast and Palicomp suck up most of the awards from PCPro, PCAdviser, PCShopper and online review sites, these days.

Dell's strong reputation, however, stems from a record of competent after sales service, which might or might not be a thing of the past but which, with businesses and others, counts for a lot. Though the power supplies they fit their XPS models are fairly cheap they are, unlike many resellers, not awful. One area where they often scrimp, particularly in their £800 or less money off deals and this applies to many other resellers also, is the motherboard, which limits your potential to upgrade at a later date. You might want to fit a K series Sandybridge and aftermarket cooler to overclock, but the motherboard doesn't have the hardware or bios options to get you there. It might not be compatible with the forthcoming Ivy Bridge CPUs. It will probably lack SSD/hard drive cacheing. It will probably lack connectivity. For many people these things are no sacrifice, though. As others have said, the price isn't great and the HD 7770 may count as new tech but the performance is poor compared to the ageing HD 6850. It is good to see a 256GB SSD drive in there. I dislike plastic cases but a lot of people like the look of the XPS and, if they get back to decent sub £700/£800 deals, I'm sure they will be seeing heat again... albeit I doubt they will be fitting those with Z68 or Z77 based chipset motherboards

If you're going to hunt out Chillblast or Palicomp deals, look first for the award winning models on Google and sort by date before heading to Chillblast and Palicomp's websites. The award winners tend to be the equivalent of supermarket loss leaders to draw people to the home pages, where Chillblast and Palicomp, who aren't making much on those deals, hope you will use their configuration options to add upgrades. Dell offer something similar but without the option to change out the motherboard. What I find encouraging is that even most of the baseline models at Palicomp tend to use good Z68 based motherboards from the get go. The motherboard is the hardest part to upgrade at a later date, so it makes sense to get it right at the time of purchase.

Noclouds, I'm currently looking for at least 2 desktop PCs and you're clearly one of the more knowledgeable members here, so many thanks for your helpful and informative posts.
