Voted cold. Similar cookers are just as cheap in Robert Dyas all year round.

That said, slow cooker's themselves are fantastic. I'll take one over a microwave any day.

Not a bad deal for those who know how to use them :)

Throw it all in the pot in the morning - go to work - come home in the evening and its cooked and ready to eat......... assuming you remember to turn it on. :whistling:

Sorry I ain't cooked anything in my life apart from fryin an egg, miss's does the rest. Does this need to be connected to power source or gas? or is it just a cooking pot?

Yes, it's electric therefore needs plugging in.

Slow cookers are brilliant for cooking things like stews, currys etc as they cook them slowly over a few hours. So you chuck everything in in the morning and when you come home from work it's all cooked, hot and ready to eat.

Tiny - the 'low' setting is usual arounf 60W, the 'high' setting is usuall 100W. So the same as lighting power. The ceramic pot itself warms evenly and retains heat very well, so the cooking process needs little power. However, it's not true that one just throws everything in raw, most meals need starting off in a saucepan. Bring the meal to a simmer, then transfer to the pot.

The cooker will come with recipe book. Beef Bourginon is a good one (beef & onion stew in red wine).

Seems pretty impressive. I think the only thing stopping me from getting one is the lack of space in my kitchen and I can't think of another place to put one of these!

I like the idea of slow cookers - meat is always more tender when cooked slowly.

Only other thing that I'm unsure about is what temperature the food gets to - I mean, you're looking for a minimum core temperature of 75 Celsius for raw meat - does that achieve this ok?

Definitely hot!. Although as other posters have said, there are cheap alternatives. DeLonghi is a good make, though. We use ours for curries (the longer you cook 'em, the better they are); and if we're going out for the day, we can bung something in straight from the freezer and know that when we get home it's going to be hot and delicious.

Yes, that's the usual method. There are some good independent slow cooker recipe books out there too - check Amazon. Beans and pulses work very well in them.

Put simply, they have two big advantages, both cost effective.

1) The use the fraction of the power that 'traditional' casserole or stew cooking in a conventional oven takes. And you can leave the house safe in the knowledge it won't boil over or start to burn.

2) The cheaper cuts of meat - brasing & stewing beef, boned chicken thighs, lamb neck fillet and belly pork for instance, are transformed when slow-cooked into tender and tasty dishes.

Other nice advantages - the kitchen fills up with very tasty smells and I've found children like the slow-cooked taste and consistency, meaning natural, nutritious meals for kids.

No, I dont work for De Longhi. Just a big, big slow-cook fan. :-D

Ordered, seems like a bargain, and theres nowt better than a pot roast cooked for 3 to 4 hours and this has a lot of space in it and will work out cheaper than the oven.

I Have had a DeLonghi slow cooker for a few years now. Cant fault it. Nothing beats slow cooking. Fab for Soups, curries, Stews, coq au vin. As someone stated earlier just remember to brown of meat first as cooking from 100% raw does not give the best results. The pot its self is large and can make a lot. so leftovers can be reheated or frozen.

I'd assume this is ok, as I sometimes use a pot on a low heat for a good few hours when making a similar dish on a gas stove.

Yep, that is the whole point of the slow cooker, no need to worry about stirring it or it sticking to the bottom of the pan.

I'd never advise anyone to cook fresh meat from frozen if that's what you're asking.

Just defrost in the fridge overnight then cook it in the morning.

Im a little dissapointed it doesn't have a timer, thought these things would have one by default. Are you sure it's ok to leave on all day? I guess thats the point really.

Maybe if you're a top chef then yes.

I guess its peace of mind really, id rather leave this on all day at work than a gas hob or electric hob.

I'm not a top chef but if I was going to be away from the house all day I would prefer to leave something designed for this sole purpose rather than a saucepan on low unattended all day.

I've left the oven on all day before on a low heat but the lowest heat still is too high for 8 hours, whereas this is designed for those long periods of time.

It's also cheaper to run.

Actually looking at the manual it does seem things need to be cooked on low for 8 hours or longer so turning on in morning before work should be perfect!

I was going to buy a rice cooker... do any of you slow cooker experts know if one could be used for that? (need to save clutter and money) ;-)

Hot deal! I've got a CookWorks (Argos) 3.5l one already and it's great for lamb shanks, curries, stews etc. This is bigger and from a well respected brand so this is an excellent find. Ordered mine just know. Bring on the winter for all tose slow cooked comfort meals!!
