How would this compare to the various bar + sub combos that are on offer at the mo?

My old chap bought 1 at the beginning of the year and quite honestly the sound is fantastic, but I am not a fan of massive bass..............

Aye. Looks alright. I have heard a soundplate which had the subwoofers coming out the bottom, and the bass was pretty impressive...better than a lot of soundbar + subwoofer combinations. Generally, I would say that one would get more bass from a soundbar + subwoofer combination, but this is a Denon, so I would expect that the bass is more than adequate/better. I hope so, anyway... As I said, they're more compact, too.

Had one of these for over a year. Very impressed. Not excessively loud, but as a tv speaker, it is excellent. Wonderful sound, and plenty loud enough. And sturdy too.

I mean, I have ordered one to use as a main sound system, using the Bluetooth function, innit.

That's good because this doesn't have massive bass. Definite improvement on the TV speakers, just not the depth and warmth expected. Sold it and went back to a Denon amp and speakers.

have a cheap sony one its as good as the denon

sorry a basic question , was always thinking all these new techs with sounds cannot still produce 5.1 Home theatre sounds(with 5 speakers and subwoofer) ? Am I wrong ?

You, see at 'normal' volumes, I found the bass beautiful. Warm, smooth... You do realise there are settings for the bass right?

You're right. The thing I don't like about 5.1s and above, is that you have to place whatever you're sitting on in the middle of the room for it to sound any good.
I don't think that the intention of these is to fully replicate a 5.1 (or above) system. Note that these cost considerably less money than true surround sound systems. I believe they're two different concepts, that, therefore, can't really be compared. Sorry.

We are entitled to disagree. Hoping the Canton DM55 at £250 is much better:

Of course we are, it was a genuine question. My findings are totally opposite to yours, hence my question.

The Canton is what my old chap bought that I mentioned earlier, as said it blew me away with the sound, I know technology has come on leaps and bounds but it blew the Sony 5.1 system I had a decade ago into a cocked hat.

Got rid of the sony due to its limitations for "normal" viewing as mentioned above and have had my tvs running thru my Denon hifi ever since for movies sport etc, but this seems like a perfect solution.

Hoping this is as good as the canton, as one review mentioned that it was nearly as good....
