I have the same Denon but with a pair of small Mission speakers.
The sound quality is superb for an all in one micro system!

This Denon is very good - the BBC uses a similar model

Does the usb port allow playback from a portable usb HDD like my 500gb Maxtor?

The product manual states.
It supports USB compatible file systems with FAT16 or FAT32.
If the USB device is divided into multiple partitions only the top drive can be selected.
Mp3 and WMA can be played.
I would expect a portable USB drive to work, if it is partitioned correctly and has the correct file system for this system.

The USB playback on the DM37DAB sucks. The mp3 CD thing works well though.

I love my Denon - it's great. Bargain.
