101 was reissued in Europe under the title TOTAL LIVE.
British import is presented anew with Hybrid Super Audio hi-res capabilities. Also comes with a bonus song.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Perhaps the first indication that Depeche Mode's US following had expanded from a small but vociferous cult was the release of documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker's film DEPECHE MODE 101, which showcased a sold-out stadium concert in southern California. This two-disc set is the soundtrack to that film. If the idea of a concert film of a synth-pop band whose live performances are based on pre-recorded tapes and sequencers seems a bit odd, this may not be for you, but Depeche Mode fans often rank this one of their favorite releases. Away from their pristine studio settings, Martin Gore's songs and Dave Gahan's voice lose some of their smooth edges, and the vocally adoring crowd undoubtedly contributes to the general air of relaxed good humor, even on the bleaker tracks

not many SACD about - shame they never really caught on - good album already got it though
#2
Voted hot. Mute records are now deleting the DM SACD releases, so grab 'em while you can.
#3
Hot! One of my favourite albums of all time.
#4
I agree with the other comments. This is a great SACD capturing a band making the leap from cult underground to mainstream. They are still one of the biggest bands in the world with a tremoundous live following and in the UK they don't really get the credit they deserve except from those in the know.

The other SACD albums are definitely worth searching out as they put old songs in a new 5.1 mix and they sound fantastic. They also come with an additional DVD version of the album along with extra tracks and a 30 minute or so promo film relating to the album. It's worth the price alone to see these...

Can't wait for the new single and album which are coming soon...and this from a band almost 30 years old!
#5
Gotta give it some heat, just because it's DM (good price though)

Roll on April 20th new album / May 30th O2 arena.... not long to wait now
#6
Best live album ever, voted hot.
#7
You couldn't count the number of band who owe their careers to DP, it's almost a certainty that Marilyn Manson or NIN would not have one without them.
Behind The Wheel, Black Celebration & Question of Time are the standouts here.
Mind you, who actually owns an SACD player ?
#8
I think my Pioneer 454 DVD player has support, but I don't have an AV amp or speakers :whistling:

Threlly

Me in the form of a DVD/SACD/DVD-A player and I wouldnt part with it for the world mainly because of the DM SACD releases.
#10
I have a DVD-A / SACD player , sounds amazing with these type of discs .

Pity I can't stand DM , good price I suppose .
#11
A fine album, from the best (and probably most under rated) band in the world

Their live shows are the best I have ever seen - they totally blow you away!

101 is a great show - voted hot

cant wait for the new album, plus the gig in May at the O2:-D

I cant understand the "under rated" comments on this thread about DM, since when are they under rated? They have a huge following in mainland europe and US and were extremely commercially popular in the UK in the 80s/90s in particular.

Kind of the same with The Cure, the UK market is fickle with "established bands" maybe because music fashion changes fast here (not necessarily a bad thing) but there are obviously a lot of DM fans in the UK and in mainland europe and the US DM fill out stadiums with ease.
#13
"Also comes with a bonus song"

This is the last track on the second multi-channel Super Audio CD; "Pimpf [Full Version]" (although this is not shown in the listing above or that on the product web site).

(The tracks "Sacred" & "Nothing" were not on the vinyl LP version too, but have been on all the CD issues/re-issues of this album since the first availability in March 1989.)

My first attendance at a Depeche Mode gig was on this tour.

That's over twenty years ago now! Eeek.

A new track "Fragile Tension" from the forthcoming album, "Tour of the Universe 2009", out on 20 April this year (with a US release a day later) is already available at many dubious sites on the Interweb if you are that way inclined.

The first single from the album, "Wrong", is scheduled for release on 6 April 2009.

They are under rated severely over here as people always regard the awful 'Just can't get enough' as a benchmark for their work and I think it's criminal that a band that has been around for almost 30 years and constantly evolving is shunned so badly by the music industry especially when - yet again - The Brit awards fail to aknowledge this and give a lifetime achievement award to the bloody Pet Shop Boys!No accounting for taste.

Excellent album though and looking forward to seeing them in Rome in June - voted Hot.Thanks!

You are obviously pretty clued up on DM releases, I wonder if you have any knowledge on this question I have...

I have several (Ultra, Music for the masses, Some Great Reward, Black Celebration, Violator, Ultra, Playing The Angel) SACD releases and all play the SACD layer fine except for some reason Violator. The SACD layer just will not detect and play in my Samsung player, I was wondering if (cant find anything on a google search) you have/and/or have heard of anyone else with a problem?

Cheers.

I disagree, they were HUGELY popular here in the late 80s whilst I was at college, with the alternative crowd, and during the whole Violator period.....I think Black Celebration, Music For the Masses, 101 Live, and Violator were huge sucesses.

As far as the Brit Awards go, there are loads of bands that have influenced others that get criminally overlooked including DM.

As much as I love DM I have to disagree that they are "under rated" they are signed to a major label, have larger than life stadium tours...personally I would prefer it if they were not so popular so I could see them at smaller venues!

..."Just Can't Get Enough" has been covered by many artists too.

The most recent being The Saturdays in aid of Comic Relief.

Did anybody ever hear the "Strangelove" cover by Phixx ("Popstars: The Rivals" runner-up band)?
Then there's Hilary Duff's "Reach Out" (or "Personal Jesus", if you prefer).

To quote the Pet Shop Boys...

"What have we done to deserve this"?

Love the album, love the band. Been to see them live twice but not this time. Can't understand why DM have turned their backs on all their Scottish, Welsh and Northern Enlish fans by just doing one gig in the O2 arena!

Need this and Contruction Time Again to complete my collection...
Sad to hear Mute are deleting them, better get my skates on.

No, I've not heard of that issue, sorry.

Do you have the UK edition? Or an import?

I have the same set of (UK) releases but I have not played mine, so I am reluctant to play just to test your theory that they are faulty, but perhaps somebody else can verify this for you.

You could, of course, just have a faulty item.

Depeche Mode's time will come.

Brit awards are given out for lifetime achievement to indicate that an artist's career is on the way down or out (or the artist themselves are not likely to make it to the next award ceremony due to ill health). Industry 'insiders' who put forward the candidates for the award this year will have heard the new material from both artists, and will have reached their own conclusions.

As good as they once were, the Pet Shop Boys are not likely to return to their mainstream popularity.

Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe have cited "Violator" as being influential in their work in that the album "raised the bar" for electronic music & they aspired to reach that level at the time (& ever since, arguably).

I do indeed have the UK SACD editions, Violator being DMCD7 as far as I am aware they only released in the US the remastered CD/DVD 5.1 combo, not the hybrid disks.

Guess my set must be faulty :-(

Noticed on Mutes site they have release dates for all remaster reissues around mid march that are none SACD (guess they are issuing them the same as they did in the US without a hybrid SACD layer)

I was thinking more of an import from Australasia, for example:

The SACD products were relatively cheap on CD-WOW.co.uk/.com for a while when they were first released, and they tend to source PAL releases from Australasia whenever possible to reduce their costs.

Have you tried your disc in anybody else's player?

Cheapest here http://www.cdwow.com/DEPECHE-MODE-Construction-Time-Again-Remastered/product/view/1866880
£10.99, but if you use the CD Wow vouchers you could get it for £9.99:thumbsup:

Most of mine were bought from CDWow with all manner of vouchers.
I swear I got most of them for a fiver each. Happy days.

Same here wished I would have snapped them all up now the prices have increased and they are going to be deleted, still not sure about getting their early stuff though, Some Great Reward is the earliest I have and I am not keen on earlier DM at all.

May get "Exciter" although that has mixed reception from fans, my opinion of it isnt that great, but know others that love the album and hate "Playing the Angel" which I find far superior!

Don't listen to Exciter very often. I agree about their very early albums too, I could probably fit the tracks I actually like on to a single disc.

One of my most played tracks recently is the 12" version of 'Get The Balance Right' which isn't technically on any studio album.

The "Combination Mix" of "Get The Balance Right!" is track #3 on the second CD in the "Remixes 81-04" set (two disc, or Limited three disc, edition).

Yeah, I have the 3 disc version. But I wouldn't class it as a studio album as such.

The version I'm fond of is on 12" 80's Volume 2. Although it's no doubt included in the colossal singles boxsets - Nightmare tagging such a large collection for iPod use :)

Yup.

It's also included in the 1991 Japanese only "Chronicles" box set ("X1" of the two CD set; the other being, oddly enough, "X2").

This set ceased being manufactured (they were "deleted") on the day of release.

I should really get around to selling mine as I never play them. Probably wait until the new album promotional copies hit eBay & see what interest I get.

I bought them new for £40 each in 1991... I expect I'd at least double my money! :)

But back on topic...

Favourite track from "101" for me...

"Nothing" (albeit one of my favourite DM tracks is the one immediately prior to this, "Shake The Disease").

Martin's vocal on the back-to-back combination of "Somebody" / "(The) Things You Said" is particular strong as well.

Well put!! I hate it when I talk to people about about DM and they think that their whole catalogue is JCGE-esque! And now The Saturdays are covering it to make matters worse!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing them at the 02 and then 2 weeks later in Rome, so I will look out for you there. ;)

Btw, loving the leaked tracks from the new album!!
