With all its understated vocals, hushed instrumentals, and lyrical declarations of/investigations into love, EXCITER is undoubtedly the warmest and most "adult" Depeche Mode album to date. "When the Body Speaks" is an effectively poignant ballad complete with graceful string section. "Lovetheme" is a gentle ambient instrumental that wouldn't sound out of place next to any German electronicat you care to mention. Later another, slightly more melodic, instrumental ("Easy Tiger") pops up. "Goodnight Lovers" is a bittersweet tune full of open-hearted sentiment and heart-tugging melodicism.
While "Breathe" is underlaid with low-key breakbeats, the group largely sticks with the sonic language they helped create in the '80s and early-'90s, leaving the trappings of latter-day electronica to the youngsters. With it's club-worthy beat, "I Feel Loved" is certainly the most danceable track on EXCITER, but its complex lyrical scheme and gnarly synth textures make it unlikely house party fodder. The harsh, bluesy tone of "The Dead of Night" harks back to "Your Own Personal Jesus", and finds David Gahan reveling in the kind of studied decadence that helped make the group's reputation, but the song is an anomaly. EXCITER offers a kinder, gentler, seemingly wiser Depeche Mode that's figured out how to grow up without growing old.

1. Dream On
2. Shine On
3. Sweetest Condition
4. When The Body Speaks
5. Dead Of Night
6. Love Theme
7. Freelove
8. Comatose
9. I Feel Loved
10. Breathe
11. Easy Tiger
12. I Am You
13. Goodnight Lovers

The more I listen to this album, the better it gets, never really fully appreciated it when it first came out.

Still think 'Music for the masses' is the best one though, 'Nothing' and 'I want you now' being the highlights.

Respect for the Mode

Since having the SACD version I have grown to like this album a little more, however by far the weakest Mode album in recent years in my opinion.

One of the best from the Mode imho. Great price thanks.

Quality album and band.

Hot.

One of their worst, but still better than most.

I'm a BIG Depeche Mode fan (I've seen them live over 10 times now and have every album on SACD) but this is definitely their worst album. A very, very weak release - if you want to listen to DM at their very best, get Violator, Playing the Angel or SOFAD. That said, it does have it's highlights - I Feel Loved and Sweetest Condition are fabulous!

Great price! & Awesome Album, highly underrated proves Mode have BALLS to by fresh and try something now, all these U2 and Bon Jovi albums they churn out are constance same trash.

The unfortunate thing for DM is that people are always gonna compare their recent work to the great run of albums from Black Celebration to Songs of Faith & Devotion.

Not sure whether to buy this, or stick pins in my eyes. I guess I'll go for pins in my eyes as it will still be painful but I'll be £3 up on the deal.

I think most people would appreciate Playing the Angel.

Sounds of the Universe is absolutely awful though... their worst ever imo.

I downloaded it and burned a CD-R as I couldn't make it to the shops on the day it came out, intending to go and buy the following weekend.

At first I thought it was a joke... at the end I threw the CD across the room in a sulk haha

Yeah, I still enjoyed the tour... always fun to be down the front for things like "A Question of Time" , and Martin's little segment, especially "Home" :)

In Chains worked ok live, but I wasn't really taken by the rest of the new stuff. "Wrong" is horrific... I can't believe it was a single.
