Have to disagree with you there Magurdrac. IMHO Playing the Angel is the weakest album.
Each to their own though and Depeche Mode are still one of the best groups around.

You're the only Depeche Mode fan I have ever heard say that O_o

For me it's possibly their best... full of rip-roaring powerful tunes... though for people who are into wibbly synths and the 80s influence, I can understand... not to the tastes of some perhaps, but weak? Good gracious, no.

I think most would be tied between Sounds of the Universe and Exciter... I threw the former away in disgust (it was a burned pre-release copy, but still :p )

Some of the unreleased material & demo tracks on the Deluxe Boxed Set Edition of "Sounds of the Universe" are very good (especially if you are familiar with the commercial releases). Were you not tempted by that edition at all?

i used to love these guys in the mid 90's violator and s.o.f.a.devtotion then went 2 c em in birmingham in 2002ish and they were rubbish just 4 old dudes limping round the stage

4?

Who was the fourth member on-stage? A random drummer? [EDIT]: Bit of research... was it Peter Gordeno?[/EDIT]

Besides which 'Fletch' doesn't move anyway, never mind "limping" around the stage.

Has anyone heard the song 'Any Second Now', it's excellent, a forgotten gem indeed.

I think they are one of the most underrated bands of all time.

...but, arguably, available as the b-side to the band's most recognisable track ("Just Can't Get Enough"). Maybe this is why you consider it forgotten; nobody played the b-side more than once! :)

PS. For the benefit of our younger members: for a definition of a "b-side" please ask your parents (or maybe even grandparents)! ;)

In the UK, yes; but they have a strong following in Europe & an even bigger following in North America. The Japanese market used to be strong in the mid-to-late 1980s too; plenty of releases were offered to the Japanese public there that were not available elsewhere.

The 3-inch CD Snap-pack single releases & the "X1"/"X2" Chronicles compilation velvet-covered boxed sets being choice examples.

Clearly you know f all about music or entertainment. DM are renowned to be top performers live.
Now go buy you GaGa tickets and away with you.

i saw them at the O2 in December, Gahan looked malnourished but his voice and enthusiasm were fantastic, i really enjoyed the concert.

My first DM purchase was a double cassette album featuring Black Celebration and Music For The Masses,
after that i was hooked !

Personally don't really think you know what you are talking about, underrated? Since when has a stadium band been underrated

I've still got that - must get a tape deck...

Mine was Everything Counts from 101, then went through the back catalogue.

I saw the 'Universe' tour in December at Brum - the first 1/3 of the gig was a bit painful. Once they moved off SOTU material everyone cheered up!

Ultra shows as £7.99 but comes up as £17.99 when you try to buy it :-(
#24
Are these the SACDs or the re-released versions with the DVD?
I'm pretty sure the SACDs have been deleted for quite some time. These tend to command really high prices on eBay. Black celebration SACD regularly goes for £100.
#25
Another opportunity to moan that I still haven't got hold of the Construction Time Again SACD. Will I ever complete my collection...

Nah, I just spat the dummy :-D

"In Chains" worked ok as an opener, but I didn't like any of the others.

"Wrong" is just that =/

I guess you may like the remixes of "Wrong" (with the lyrics removed).

The album isn't the typical offering from the band because Martin Gore was not as involved in the composition of three of the tracks and, yes, arguably it does suffer (not well) for this but it is interesting to hear how Dave Gahan's (co-)writing has improved since his solo releases, and Martin's lyrics, as ever, are very poignant (based on his personal circumstances at the time he wrote them).

When I first played through the entire album nothing stood out for me & it took a few more complete play-outs to appreciate it for what it is. That was the first time a DM album has, or at least a couple of tracks on an album have, not immediately grabbed my attention. In fact, after my first play I put the album to one side for three or four months & then went back to it thereafter (& to hopefully justify the cost of the Deluxe Boxed Set).

Perhaps I wasn’t in the right mood or frame of mind to appreciate the album on the first outing, but even now there is the odd track or two that I may skip whilst playing it. These are not the Gore compositions though; he is still producing a good quality of output even after all these years in my opinion.

“Perfect” & “Fragile Tension” are my personal favourites, but “Ghost” (only available as part of the Deluxe Boxed Set) is one of Gore’s better post-divorce penned-tracks, although the lyrics to “Corrupt” are very moving too.

Certainly not their best effort, but not a bad album.

BFN,

fp.

For me, 1986-87, i was the only one at school that liked Depeche Mode (they called them Depressed Mood). Like i said earlier, Black Celebration/Music For The Masses were my first album purchases and have remained favourites. I then tried to buy every vinyl single and album that i could get my hands on and up to 93, i have pretty much every single released.
