Depeche Mode (French for "hurried fashion") was one of the first and best of the British synth-pop bands, combining breathless, melodic pop with perky electronics. With main songwriter Vince Clarke's departure for Yazoo, Martin Gore took the reigns, and the band's sound became darker and harder, though still true to their trademark synth-driven accessibility. The post-Clarke band's moody dance-pop brought Depeche Mode worldwide superstardom in the second half of the '80s. The band survived overexposure, drug problems, and all the other traditional rock-star travails, and came out older and wiser, entering the 2000s as a fully functioning, mature unit.

Shows how cool us HUKDers are

DM fan here too.
People should check out the albums as they are much better than singles compilations.
#8
Yes, the best band in the world. This collection covers them at their peak.
#9
But no Vince Clarke-era tracks on this collection.
#10
Definitely the best band in the world! I've seen 'em live over 10 times now and 'just can't get enough' (sorry for the awful pun!). Roll on the next album and tour! My pics from their recent tour... http://www.bardocreative.co.uk/dm/

Hehe. Go figure, eh!

I'm just not that keen on the really early DM 'pop' stuff - IMHO, they didn't really discover their own musical identity until 'Black Celebration' (although 'Some Great Reward' did give tantalising glimpses of what was in store). That's just my opinion, though - I'm sure there are plenty of others out there that love the early stuff! Each to their own, eh!
#13
Yes indeed.
#14
I love DM and I think you'll find it's 'future', not 'hurried' :-D

That's totally how I feel about DM, much prefer Some Great Reward era onwards, and in fact did not buy any SACDs before that time period.

Please explain to me how a band being the best in the best in the world can be stated as a fact !!

Did you not got to school and learn what the word fact means ?

Love DM, saw them for the first time last year. They were awesome! Great deal, heat and rep added.

Well, I first saw Dm back in 1980 (i think!) at "the venue" in Victoria - was prior to the release of their first single "dreaming of me" ( a hugely underrated track with a great "b" side "ice machine") - I had phoned Daniel Miller at Mute records to find out when they were playing in London after reading a report of one of their gigs at "crocs" in essex (nice bloke - very chatty!)

Along with OMD , they were the mainstay of my gig-going , - think I saw both bands 5 or 6 times in the space of 18 months or so.

Here`s the thing - I think Vince Clark is a genious when it comes to catchy tunes. He proved that with DM/ASSEMBLY/YAZOO and ERASURE , but to my mind, the first DM album was over produced and took away the rawness of the live versions - a couple of examples being Photographic and Tora! Tora! Tora! ( get the best version of "photographic" on the "some bizarre album").

Have wanted to like post Vince DM much more than I have been able to - have loved some tracks, but on the whole didn`t really "get it" . The fact that they were/are so big in the States probably explains a lot .

Great deal though and heat added.

.....+1 !! - a fan since `78 and still a fan !

First saw him in 1980 at the Dominion theatre, last saw him in 2008 at Guilfest - the man is a genius.

Great price - but already got it. Saw them twice in the 80s - fantastic. Have some heat from me!
#25
Great album, I've seen them live many times..........reach out and touch faith................

Someone put me onto DeVision a German group last month and I've been listening to their latest album Popgefahr ever since.

It's very '80s synth, very Depeche and great to listen to when cycling.

Photographic is a fabulous and much underrated song imho. Best version I've heard is the 'Rex the Dog' mix on the DM Remixes 81-04 3-CD collection! love it :-)

All time favourite DM track, though, is still 'World in my Eyes' - I *love* that track!

Hehe. This really is turning into a DM love in! :-)

If you're gonna buy just one DM album, it's got to be Violator!!!!!

followed by songs of Faith and Devotion!
#35
Great CD - I loves it! Worth getting the early one later too
#36
Recently got the DVD version of this to go with the CD, thats equally as good. Gahan is a genius, probably the best front man out there in the last 30 years.
#37
Excellent album to break you into Depeche.

Glad Vince split from Depeche otherwise we wouldn't have had Yazoo/Erasure as well as a much darker DM. Bring on the Vince/Erasure bashing - Sorry it's what normally happens though.

Enjoy the Silence is without doubt a masterpiece and probably in my top three tracks.

Heat added
