A huge Derren fan, but I found this disappointing compared to "Something wicked this way comes". (In that, he has a trick involving the phrase "tear around influential", which I found truly disturbing in its implications and possible applications)

I saw the enigma show this week, that was incredible!

Much raving on twitter about that. Presumably that'll be his Xmas 09 dvd release. :)

yeah I think I'd pick up it to show my family as they don't believe how good it was!

Enigma is an incredible show.

The ending is jaw dropping and hilarious!

This has been free on 4OD for ages, and does not look like it is going to stop being free any time soon either. Have voted this warm.

The implications are that it was a TRICK and had nothing to do with subliminal influence... sorry to disappoint you. When you think an effect is caused by psychology, its because Derren has mis-directed you to believe that, to keep you from attending to the actual mechanism of the trick.

You misunderstood my point; I'm entirely skeptical of "subliminal influences", but I was very impressed with the insertion of the phrase "tear around influential" which the viewer simply doesn't hear until its use is pointed out to him at the end of the show.

At that point you can rewind the dvd and watch that earlier section of the show again, and plainly hear the phrase once you're aware it's there. It's fascinating that the brain doesn't hear things which it cannot reconcile with the current context and makes you wonder how often TV and film (and tv news!) use such tricks or more subtle variations.

I'm sure that this phrase has nothing to do with the tearing of the newspaper. As you say, it's a trick involving misdirection.

Anything Derren Brown sounds good to me. I went to see both Something Wicked this way comes and Enigma live and they were amazing shows. It is a bit disappointing to discover a few of the acts are indeed 'tricks' that anyone could potentially stand up and perform, but on the whole most of his work is really amazing and I loved the endings to both of those shows :)

Goose and moose and apple juice ;)

This is hot.

I've seen him live and they are great shows.
