Daft question, do you have to book a cabin? If you don't is there sufficient seating?

No need there's free seating

Voted hot for the stupid calais remarks by some.
I've done Calais a few times this year actually. that nightmare journey was at night so I suppose it was my fault for travelling at that time? Any I don,t need that hassle and my preference is this route, yours is clearly Calais- each to their own. Hopefully this deal will help some, clearly not you!
franconormand

bigfatmatt2001
Can you explain the nightmare at Calais. Not been a problem the twice I've been through this year.
If your a motorhome owner avoid DFDS none of their offers apply to motorhomes or car towing caravan.
For this and the Calais comment it's cold from me

Sure happy to explain the nightmare- not keen to repeat a journey where branches are laid in the middle of the motorway and stones thrown at the car near Calais port

Think you've been watching to many TVs programs.all this apparently only started this year and as you put the same deal on last year you clearly haven't been through Calais this year. Looking at pictures and getting someone to read the daily mail is fair enough. If you drive a wagon on the the back roads past the jungle at 3am with a TVs film crew in tow what do you expect. Drive the normal routes into Calais port and you will see police patrols every 500 yards

Thank you :)
Good price but it's nowhere near enough city time, one time I went there was a problem and people were left with one hour in the city.

Some real idiots on this post isn't there!
They do search you for alcohol before you board at North Shields.
Done that trip more than a dozen times (live less than 2 miles from the terminal) and never been searched for booze, nor have anyone I have ever travelled with.
Really? I've flown several times to Amsterdam and would never ever go on the boat again. They so search you, maybe not every person but I have seen it happen with my own eyes so for you to just say outright "no" is completely wrong.
In my experience I have never been searched nor seen anyone else searched on embarkation, on many trips there - what is completely wrong about sharing my experiences? Maybe you just look a bit shifty?
They should only be concerned with you drinking booze they haven't supplied when in their bars.
I'm sure as a Wallsend lad called monkeyhanger your a real upstanding citizen! I haven't been searched but I have seen it happen on my only trip. I don't believe what your saying and neither should anyone else.

So you've been on the ferry once and claim to have seen it happen, therefore it happens all the time? They have no need to search your bags upon entry to the ship for booze. They do have reason to stop you drinking your own booze in their bars, but you could take what you liked on board and drink it in your own cabin if you so wished. Wallsend? No, other side of the Royal Quays - there you go making assumptions again.

So you go to Amsterdam, go shopping, get a few bottles of rare/unusual Belgian beers to bring home, and board the ferry for the return journey - are they going to search your bags and confiscate it? Don't talk rubbish.

£28 each way on a boat taking 90+ minutes or £30 each way on the channel tunnel in 35 minutes.... I know which I would choose.
£30 each way in the tunnel?
When?

Going at 5pm, returning 7pm same day no doubt :)

Never seen them that cheap without Tesco vouchers!
Managed to get our ferry for three weeks' time cheaper by using the P&O Daily Mail promotion (ewww) and getting a £22 return 'overnight' fare from Dover to Calais. We're just not using the return leg, and then we're coming back from Dunkerque via DFDS. Slightly convaluted but got peak time fares for £66 return!
I've crossed with P&O a few times for less than £25 return. DFDS seems to be consistently significantly more expensive offers or not. Why would anyone bother with them?
Thanks! Just booked for about £40 less than the prices last week.

All night, but you're asleep for most of it.
How long does that ferry journey take on the cold north sea?
I got flights and hotel for £200 for 4 nights in Amsterdam (10th - 14th january). I'd much rather go for four nights and pay £100 each than £39 for 5 hours and the flight is only 80 minutes
I've done this mini cruise 3 times now plus 1 time with a night in hotel. great price the dearest I've ever paid was 40.
people complain about only 5 hours but where else can you go for a city with 2 nights accommodation for 30 quid! would cost me 30 quid just the journey to and from Newcastle!

sounds like a ferry crossing with a few extras. not sure if this is actually a special deal or not, so not voting.
Only departure is from Newcastle so you have to add that to the journey as well. Two daily sailing in rough seas on a cold day on a 1 hr flight from a local airport. Know which one I would chose and flights can be found very cheap. Although Amsterdam is the main airport in Holland there are other small airports dotted around the country depending on which place you want to visit. The flower fields are so amazing but a bit early yet, night clubbers go to Amsterdam and the typical Dutch villages are great places. Having lived there for 12 years I have probably seen it all but wouldn't mind going back again for a short trip. The Dutch are quite friendly compared to other places and I so fancy a patat special (chips special) to those who don't know is a portion of chunky chips served in a cone and topped with mayo, ketchup, raw chopped onions, hot peanut sauce and maybe some spicy brown sauce or if you are really brave try some of the raw fish but you have to be dutch to be able to slick it down in one go!!! Keep the cameras ready for a bit of fun. There are also many other attractions to visit in Holland so worth staying a few days. Don't forget you will need Euros and anyone without an EU passport will also require a visa.

Edited By: googley2 on Feb 01, 2015 19:19
The visiting time in Amsterdam is the secondary aim of this trip on DFDS ferries - primarily it's 2 nights out in a floating bar, if you know this upfront then you won't be disappointed.
My partner went on a trip like this with her family. They had a horrible time. Sea sickness, very little time in Amsterdam, you spend nearly 2 days on a horrible ferry and very little time there. Worst "holiday" they had ever been on. You have been warned.

Still they paid a damn sight more than this so not knocking the deal!
I see the DFDS Ferry passing my living room window every evening on its way out of the Tyne - it was extremely late coming in today - rough seas last night! Was on a particularly rough crossing in Dec 2011, and I managed to get one pint in before I was spewing my guts up. Bad all night. On a calm crossing it can be a laugh on the ship, but i'd rather take a KLM flight from Newcastle airport in the winter for about £70 each way and stay over.

Can take your own food and drink as long as it's drank in your room (so simply go back to your room to fill your class with vodka)
Just been on Tuesday, we took own food and mini fridge nothing was said know your not allowed eating and drinking your own in public areas. We didn't know we were at sea it was that calm
Could anyone that had taken this confirm that you can take your own food?Do they check your bags?

Thanks
A regular deal in the quiet season (try getting those prices July/August). I live 2 miles from the DFDS ferry and have used it regularly - wouldn't chance it this time of the year though. If the sea is rough there's nothing worse. I have a cast-iron stomach, yet I was chucking up my first and only pint of the night within 10 mins of the ship leaving the Tyne on a particularly rough crossing.

This trip is more about 2 nights out on the ship rather than the trip to Amsterdam which will generally see you there only 5 and a half hours. The entertainment is so bad that it's good (think Phoenix nights).
standard price really

this place is right at the border.

Don't know how, but they always have cheaper diesel.
For comparison I use: http://www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/
Carrefour is the cheapest but you if ever find yourself around the area, check them out, you will be surprised :)
Cigarette prices are regulated in Belgium, so there won't be much variation between shops. But some give a good exchange rate if you pay in pounds.

As for fuel, I'm surprised the diesel price is better than France. Taxes mean average Belgian diesel is about €1.45 /l compared to €1.30 /l in France.

Great price. Recently went the trip to amsterdam with dfds and the crossing over was terrible ! Good entertainment on ship. Expensive drinks around £8 euro for glass of wine and about 6 euro for a bottle of beer! Worth booking restaurant at the time of booking as it's more expensive to book when you arrive on ship! Not a lot of time in amsterdam so if you are able to do the hotel stay aswell then it's defo worth it. Heat added

Why terrible?
I done the trip on a stag do and we took vodka on board in sprite bottles.

My Wife and I actually looked into this a while back when looking for Cruise Deals. This is, in my opinion a complete waste of time and money. I work Off-Shore on Oil Rigs and these floating Trucks have nothing like the standard we have off-shore in Norway and after 14 days Im bored outta my mind. Unless you plan on writing a book (like previously mentioned) then dont bother. If you do plan on writing a book save yourself a grand and do it at home then reward yourself with a real cruise. :D

We just booked a deal where we cruise around Italy with a night in a 4 star hotel in Venice on the first night and oebn at the end of a 15 day cruise and flights included for 1100. Two years ago we got a cracking deal with P&O. two weeks Caribbean Cruise with flights for a grand each, even better when kids went free!
jgtuk
Burgmeister
This just isn't cheap. If you can sail at any time then cruise ships can be had for the same price. Whilst the cruise ship experience isn't for everyone, not all of them are "Butlins at Sea". P&O do adult only ships and both Cunard and Fred Olsen are aimed more at the adult market.

You get a doctor on board and any entertainment that you wish to use. If you don;t want any then you can sit on your balcony (or in your room) and get as much peace and quiet as you like.

I honestly thought traveling as a passenger on a container ship would be way cheaper than this.

The problem is, you and many others are comparing this to a holiday cruise and they are simply not comparable in that sense (financial or much else really). Prices of apples differ from Orange prices because they are different fruits... I would never go on a tourist cruise and I would never go on a package holiday. I have no problem with people that do, vive La Différence, I just fail to see why this thread is concerned with package cruises when this most certainly isn't. Maybe the op should have described it differently in his title.

You are quite correct, they are different. I think people are making the comparison because the OP did in the blurb at the beginning.

I know its been like a month since you commented, but can you drink your own alcohol on the boat?

Only if you sneak it in they take it off you if they find it in your case.
