Some 1st gen core-i series had odd memory bus speeds and limited functions and poor integrated gfx are a major drag on performance. I have two first gens, one with nvidia and one with integrated. CPU performance the same but usability difference like night and day.

come 2nd gen core-i, it's finally more than good enough even with integrated. Go for 3rd gen if you need the portability. Seriously, most models when updating from 2nd to 3rd gen, battery life is doubled. Lower heat may also mean longer life.

Technology has finally delivered long lasting battery, relatively lightweight and high performance for a cheap price -- just make sure it's 3rd gen core-i. :p

Some of us remember buying our first 486 :D, I don't really get what you are trying to say though?

I am saying...don't get too hung up on 2nd gen/3rd gen etc....99% of users could only tell the difference by the sticker next to the trackpad.

I totally agree with you, even gen 1 is ample, I just thought i'd point it out for anyone that isn't tech savvy. Hence me saying it's still a very capable CPU.

And each generation brings better graphics to the table, as a lot of these devices rely on the on board CPU/GPU and don't have discrete chips, also as mentioned power consumption is better, but that's marginal.

One of my favourite laptops is my elderly Lenovo X60 core duo 1.83, It runs Windows 8, i've put an SSD in it and 3GB of ram and STILL copes with everything I throw at it, 7 years of excellent value. Probably get's used 80% of my time online.

While there are performance & power advancements across each generation, you're probably right :)
