Just to be sure is this a gizmo that connects to a computer (laptop or other) via a single USB cable and then enables ethernet, parallel and keboard etc. to be connected and fed through to the computer via the single USB ? Doe it affect connection speeds as it would seem that the single USB cable is being asked to a lt of work !

Yes the supplied USB cable is to mate to the Laptop/Desktop, it also has its own power supply. Ethernet routed via USB will take a hit speed wise* but I guess its there to be all things to all men so if your using it with a laptop you just have the one USB plug to remove before you go walkabout.
*USB 2 has a throughput of 400Mps (bursts) so you may just not notice unless d/loading war and peace ;)
