I was considering to build a MCE PC... but for £44 this is a steal!!! Excellent Price!!!

This is a twin tuner freeview box! I've been looking around and I can say the following...

This unit can have its drive upgraded to 120-160GB

The refub units come with newer PSU (5A) units and do not suffer the problems of the old FVRT100's... (hanging and error's)

This unit can be upgraded to run the FVRT200's software... So if you up the HDD size and update the firmware your sorted... Oh and dont touch LP mode I've been told.

****PLEASE NOTE: THE PSU ISSUE IS SORTED THE MICRODIRECT REFURBS ARE 5A****

It will come with the *latest* FVRT100 Firmware so no need to worry about over-the-air updates

If you want to update the firmware to the one of the FVRT200 then check my other posts... HDD upgrade is simple!

20th June 07.... 299 In Stock!! Be Quick!!

Don't forget the auto updates transmitted usually screw these up and cause you to have to do a full reset...

If you update the firmware to the latest and then just leave it on standby overnight it should update the EPG at 3AM and be fine, I would not update the firmware over-the-air, but using a serial cable or directly to the HDD...
#3
You're assuming everyone would do this...

Most leave it for the over-the-air, which will cause them problems.

I'm not trying to put anyone off, as it is a good price for what you can do, just making people aware you are getting what you pay for.

And another warning, don't expect it to run quietly...

missed that other post... can provide loads of simple and easy sites explaining all the procedures for anyone wanting to upgrade or flash the firmware...

for the price its a great unit, its not your humax but its worth its price...

-- also, if you upgrade the hdd and use a 2.5 Laptop disc then the fan can be removed..

Out of curiosity, does anybody know what format it uses for recording? Wondering if the recordings could be played back on a PC.....

Dont know the format, but the HDD needs to be removed to transfer it over, or u need to mod it to add a USB connector to it (saves opening it up), there is software (can provide links) that allow you to browse the drive (different filesystem) and you can then transfer to pc and convert as necessary..

This is a great deal for not much more than a basic freeview box.

I picked mine up from microdirect this morning as it goes.

This model was a mass market model of a couple of years ago. It suffered from quite a few problems that stemmed from the power supply being too weak. This refurb (the one I got anyway) includes the updated power module and is shipped with the final version of firmware that was released pre installed, so I don't think you need to worry about firmware updates. So given all that I couldn't resist the temptation. Yes, it's not new, but it has all it's problems sorted and has a 12month warranty.

Does as it should. twin tuner. For anyone new to these, you can watch one channel and recorder another, record two whilst watching either, or record two channels whilst watching something you recorded earlier. Lots of nice features.

We've got the FVRT145 which is essentially the same machine with a bigger hdd (80GB), and it's been one of the best things we've ever bought. Yes it can have it's problems, but if you do have a problem then you can pretty much guarantee that somebody on Digitalspy will have had the same problem - and know how to sort it out. There are a few unwritten commandments which must be adhered to though: -

1. Never ever use the compression to make the recordings smaller as this can corrupt the hdd and you'll have to reformat to get it working again. This can be avoided by setting it to record with subtitles - then it won't let you compress.

2. The cooling is poor, don't put it on top of another piece of equipment (DVD player, VCR, Skybox etc) as if it overheats then the picture drops out and it can crash. This is the only problem I had last summer. It was fine once I let it cool down and moved it. For the same reason it is best if it is not in a cabinet. Having said that, ours is in a cabinet, but on it's own shelf, with plenty of ventilation and no back to the cabinet.

3. If you switch it off at the mains overnight, then it won't download the EPG, although with 14 days, you could just leave it on once a week.

4. The background picture on all the menus is awful - a bit like somebody has thrown up on your tv screen. This can be changed if you are willing to mess about with it (See DigitalSpy again)

5. It's rather noisy. I wouldn't want it in my bedroom, and because it's best outside a cabinet, this may be an issue. We can only really hear ours when the TV is switched off, which with Myself, Mrs Mike and 4 kids is not very often.

6. The remotes a bit bobbins!

Hope this helps - if I didn't already have one, I'd buy one!

I'd be interested in this too.

I'm after a basic box as I havn't has a PVR before - if it only lasts a year so be it - I can replace it with a better model when I've got a better idea of what features I do or don't want.

What extra do you get with that firmware upgrade?

Cheers,
worto.

The website is a little out of date (not mine), if you need any specific help/tips/links or anything just ask.....!

Lots of info....got all my info from Digital Spy.... Great info on this stuff!

Last question I promise - has anyone had to send anything back to these people - Ive not brought from them before & have had problems with refurb kit in the past.

Did you have the new PSU with your PVR (5A) version or the older 2A ones, the 2A PSU's crashed all the time as it could not power it... this is not the case with the refurb as you get a 5A PSU...

I dont think the unit sounds too bad (ok I would not have it in a bedroom but its fine downstairs and if its that bad, put in a 2.5" drive and scrap the fan...(ok this is not a step for everyone):p

Hi, I got this last week, super fast service, only got a 2a power supply though (but not within a plug).

Looks brand new, remote is a bit cheap looking, machine is a little noisy when everything else is off and menu background is nasty to view.

All that said it works fine, records and plays no problem and it cost me £44, what more do you want for £44...........:whistling:

Here is my reply to a fellow HUKD user........this may be of some use to any of you........;-)

------------------------------

The 120GB Maxtor should work fine, hopefully it will fit... (you will find the current maxtor in the unit is slim and it maybe a tight fit). You should be ok...

Digital Spy is very time consuming as there are about a billion posts :P however, you just need to understand the unit features and a few crucial points....

- Keep ventilated...

- DO NOT update the *firmware* over-the-air... (use a serial cable or attach HDD to PC)

- Keep unit on standby overnight at least once a week for the EPG to download

- Never ever use the LP feature

The USB mod, is not easy but is very handy and saves having to open the unit....

So here is a link for the USB mod...:

http://bigtimebadstyle.fortunecity.co.uk/digi200usbmod.htm

Click points 1.. 2.. 3... for the pics and info...

Here are some further links you may find useful...

http://www.hope.co.nz/projects/fusion/

http://www.eccleson.org/Syphon

Two links to applications that allow you to read the HDD's filesystem and browse the disc...

P.S.. Please REP & Heat this deal/post if its helped you!

If you get a 2A plug save yourself the hassle.......!!

Call DigiFusion to arrange a replacement 5A or get onto MicroDirect, these should all come with the 5A PSU's and the latest FVRT100 firmwares...!

Thanks for this post...ive gone for one just hope our g/f can work it out as the dvd recorder is driving her mental :giggle:

I got one of these last week and the fan is a little noisy.

I tried swapping the hard disk for a spare 120Gb desktop PC 3.5" hard disk but it would not work - even with the 5A power supply, the unit wouldn't power up properly.

If you are considering upgrading the hard disk, it is worth considering getting a 2.5" laptop hard disk as this will allow you to remove the fan completely - making the unit nearly silent...

I went for a Fujitsu 120Gb laptop HDD for £40:

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=3Y4B

You'll also need a 3.5" to 2.5" disk adapter:

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3ZLS

I followed the instructions here:

http://www.mousemat.f2s.com/FVRT100/laptopdiskReplacement.htm

Thanks

Gavin
