Don't do it!!!

I bought this about 6 months ago from Microdirect and after 48 hours it wouldn't turn on. Had to send it back which cost me £20 in p&p to receive then post back!

might have just been my luck but I have to vote it cold.

I purchased a FVRT 100 Refurb from Microdirect. Mine was also faulty, but I liked it so much I repaired it [replaced capacitors] When they work they are great.

I've got a Digifusion FVRT145 and love it (nearly 2 years old and only missed about half a dozen recordings) If you get a good one, then it's great - especially at this price. They do have there little problems, but most can be fixed/avoided if you know about them.

I would strongly recommend looking through the forums on Digitalspy to anyone who has one of these or is thinking about getting one (or any other PVR come to mention it!)

Not too bad...well..already have one, no need to buy , but voted hot

we have two, great units!

Totally agree - great units when working - voted hot.

Stupid question time please !!

Can i use this as a sky recorder or will it only record freeview ?

Reason i ask is cannot get good freeview reception here, but have managed to get sky, or most of the channels, I dont want to buy sky+ as i think overpriced but would like the functions on the cheap, will this enable me to pause live etc or do i need to look at something else

Thanks

Nice deal, i own the fvrt-100 (40gb I think), and couldn't live without a PVR now! Only thing to watch out for is that the power leads commonly need replacing on my model (and mine did), but other than that, a nice find

No, Freeview only. There are no inputs other than aerial to the tuners.

How much are these new? need to buy one as i brought a £50 normal freeview box without recorder as a present for someone but they want a recorder one
I want one want does not miss recordings , it sounds as though these go faulty alot?
#15
Sorry but voted cold. This PVR is a cack! It's freeview settings are poor and the hdd kept making clicking sound. Returned it and bought a Humax - Quality does matter when viewing tv.

I'm another one who got one of these refurbed machines a little while ago and regretted it. Mine lasted less than a fortnight before it stopped working and had to be returned. Mind you when it was working it was very noisy and at 3 am when they update the EPG it sounded like it was taking-off (more fool me for having it my bedroom!) so I wasn't that upset when it failed. :-D

Micro-direct didn't make any sort of fuss when I returned it and they credited my credit card almost immediately. It led me to suspect that there is quite high failure rate, at least with the refurbs.

The Digifusion boxes aren't so available now, but they were quite good.
Early firmware versions had a tendency to crash occasionally (as with a lot of digital TV equipment) but leter releases have been quite reliable.

The manufacturer-original menu pages feature a background graphics which does detract from the readability of the screen, but it's not too bad.

The FVRT100 was the first model. It had a 40G HDD.

There was the FVRT145 was fitted with a 80GHDD and was sold by Argos.

The FVRT150 had an 80GHDD and was very similar to the FVRT145.

The last model was the FVRT200, which was quite slick looking and I think 80GHDD.

There are a couple of recognised weaknesses with the Digifusion, but not real show-stoppers.

All models are powered by an external "Wall Wart" power supply. Especially the earlier models, these were run close to the maximum rating and could begin to fail. The classis symptom is the box refusing to complete startup and just displaying "Hold". There are suppliers who sell quite cheap, higher rated 12V PSUS for just this purpose.

The other weak spot seems to be that some of the large capacity electrolytic capacitors on the can fail over time. replacement is alleged to be simple, but I've never tried it.

You'll need a decent signal, as with all digital TV. Check you can get Channel 300, which is where the 14-day EPG is transmitted.

The hard disk can be upgraded to a lerger size, but the box does seem a little picky for power consumption and physical size of the HDD.

There's a wealth of information, including how-to for upgrading the firmware, (you can give an FVRT150 most of the functionality of an FVRT200) upgrading the HDD, changing the background and more, available at http://philifusion.googlepages.com/ (The old Technonotice site often referred to in forums)

I'd also agree with the comment about the forums at digital spy. Very useful.

Overall the box is very good, only let down for me by the poor signal in my home area, but that's no reflection on the Digifusion.

Truth be told, visiting the DigitalSpy forums will reveal why so many people still prefer this as their freeview PVR of choice. Change the hard drive for a laptop equivalent and remove the fan and it becomes a whole lot better i.e. very reliable and silent. Some people do not like the work to do this but if you are even semi proficient with upgrading a PC for example, this is a simple, straight forward task.

yes i did that! Bought a 100 version put in a new laptop Hdd, updated the firmware to the 200 Version and took the fan out!

Now it is the most excellent piece of electronic kit i think i have ever bought!

One thing i will say is that you cannot set how many minutes on either side of a recording you want it to record. and sometimes it does miss my shows.... if only i could set it to start 5 mins early and finish 5 mins late!
#21
if they work fine, but ive had 2 go dodgy just trying to rma one now

You can do this however you must do it manually at the time you are setting up the scheduled recording.

Quick question for those of you out there who already own these... does it have a) Composite video out? b) S-video out? c) optical audio out?

I am running out of inputs on my screen / amp, so really need a PVR which can do either of those video-out's AND has optical audio out.

Thanks! Matt

None, it only has RF out and also 2 scart outputs.

After 25 Minutes i got through, so be warned if you do have one go wrong, plus i have to pay postage(they say they will refund postage if product is faulty) as they say they dont have there own carriage supplier. Although all of the other rmas ive had to do in my life have been picked up if faulty. Apart from smaller items like cpus and such.

Most come and pick the item up then charge you carriage if said item proves to be not faulty

(they say they will refund postage if product is faulty)

Exactly the reason why I don't shop with MicroDirect anymore. I returned a 100% faulty RC car (no lying, this thing was trash & I'm an electronics engineer by trade) - cost £12 to return as it was a big box, only to get the reply ' the item was tested and found good and returned to stock therefore no refund of return postage'
Shady practices to save money on postage refunds in my IMHO.:x Sorry MicroDirect but no more future money from me I'm afraid.
#27
funnily enough all the stuff ive bough has had to be rma'd from them first off
#28
Had one, it went wrong, i had to send it back, cost me £13, got refund, nothing but trouble

Does this box have a series link facility like Sky+?

No it doesn't.

My father is after a PVR, sounds like with some of the comments here its not really worth the £44 of trouble. Even if the units are reliable after upgrading, yes I am proficient in PC building etc, but by the time you have added a laptop harddrive and removed the fan, the added cost of said harddrive you may have been better off looking at a PVR deal at around £90-100 and at that price you can get one with 160gb drive anyway. Somehow wont be recommending to him his money would be well spent here.

Voted cold due to high possiblility of grief and extra money spent to get this thing to be "good"
#32
Hi - we ordered one of these and it doesn't work, hopefully will get a replacment that works but will have to vote this cold I'm afraid!
#33
Im still waiting for my replacement to come and i had to pay £20 to send it back for the privilage, they allegedly will pay it if found faulty but i bet i know what happens.!!!

More trouble than its worth............get the £100 thompson from argos
#34
Still around.. thanks for the pointer paddymcn

Sorry Edi, I did check to see if it had been posted already but couldn't see it, obviously not thoroughly enough.

Mine has just arrived, I bought it as a gift so I hope its a little more reliable than the ones referred to in previous posts...
