Tesco are also doing a Toshiba HDMI DVD player that upscales for £19.97, would that not be better? ...

How good is upscaling. I'm a bit loathe to get another DVD recorder as the current one I have is also a recorder but it doesn't upscale so it won't be replaced. It does progressive scan output though which is quite nice. Is it really worth getting an upscaling DVD player?

From my experience, my upscaling dvd player improves the quality of standard dvd's but I suspect that it is more to do with the fact it is connected via HDMI as appossed to scart. An lcd or plasma will upscale a standard dvd anyway, it just depends on how well it does it. Will a £20 upscaler do a better job?

"complete with HD upscaling which upgrades standard DVD discs to 1080p quality"

This is complete tosh. I don't understand how manufacturers/retailers can get away with complete lies like this. So what they're trying to have people believe is "why buy a blueray player and blueray discs, just gat a £20 upscaling dvd player"................yeah right.!

Yes, it would.

People, you don't need upscalers in cheap DVD players. Your TV will almost certainly do a much better job with its internal scaler. These players just have them as a marketing feature, and as you can see it's working... How good can the upscaler on a £20 DVD player be? Not very.

I have a Panasonic plasma and a Toshiba DVD player and I set the DVD player to 480p and let the TV do the upscaling to its own resolution for better results.

Bargain for an upscaler but i wouldnt go for it due to the brand, i cant see it being an improvement

No divx symbol on the front so I would doubt it.

No, you specifically need a HD-DVD player for that.

I can only speak from experience. I have Sony 32" S3020 and a Toshiba 32AV505D. Now I have an old Sony DVD player and had bought a Goodmans GDVD148HDMI for £20. The difference in the picture quality when upscaling to 1080i was very significant, I tried letting the TV's upscale but setting the Goodmans to 1080i made a huge difference.

So on the strength of that I bought a Sony NS-708 for £60 as the thing that bugs me about cheap DVD players is no disc memory. The NS-708 upscales but I'm not convinced it's better than the Goodmans, in fact I think I prefer the goodmans image.

So I wouldn't dismiss cheap DVD upscalers. On the flip side the original Goodmans GDVD151HDMi I bought packed up after two months and Goodmans replaced it with the GDVD148HDMI. I can' fault the after sales service I got for a £20 DVD player.

Take what you will out of that, since neither of my TV's produce a true 1080p picture.

Good call paulgee31.
I too have a Goodmans upscaler and the picture quality is very good.
I have seen the Toshiba Upscaler in Tesco's for £19.97 and that looks the business, but does it do what it says on the tin. And why is it only £20? Hmmmmm.............

If you've bought yourself a cheap flat panel with an HDMI socket yet you are using your old DVD player connected via a scart cable, then this will probably be £20 well spent.

It quite unusual for even more expensive player to come with an HDMI lead. This would eat even further into their presumably slim profit margins! Plus, most people buying this will probably be using SCART.

Just ordered a Sony Blu-Ray player and even it doesn't come with an HDMI lead...

Why would people buy this to use a scart cable with it?:?
