Went in to Curry's today to buy the LG 50" 720p HD TV listed on here a week or so ago.. Spotted this one on sale instead! It's not store specific or a managers special, and scans on their EPOS system at this price, so I'm pretty sure it's nationwide. It's not on the website, and apparently it's a discontinued model, but if you can find one in stock at your local store, it's a bargain!

Okay, it's not a great brand (Currys / Dixons / PC World Own Brand), but the picture is superb and it's 1080p so full HD for Blu-Ray and such.. Seriously, where else could you get a 40" 1080p LCD Screen for under £250? I'm genuinely impressed with it for the price!

Receipt and a larger image to follow in the next post, I know how people on here like a bit of proof..

Have you got it home yet / watching. I believe the price but really intersted to see how you get on with it?
#3
Yep, it's home and installed with an XBOX 360, Sony Blu-Ray player and Sky HD - it's certainly an improvement on my old HANNspree 37" 1080p set.. Contrast is better, blacks are darker.. If I am being totally critical, the only negative comment I have to make about it is very slight motion blur on fast moving images as the refresh rate isn't particularly high, but aside from that, I'm genuinely really impressed.. I can't believe what a bargain it was..

One of those confusing TVs where 1080p is "HD Ready" not "Full HD" ???
#10
What ports does it have? I'm guessing the standard HDMI is there, but does it have composite/component/USB ports?

Hmmmm, me thinks it's 720p, just accepts 1080p signals.
#12
2 HDMI's, USB, Composite and VGA - Nice connectivity really..

It's new rather than refurbished, and as I said earlier, it's a discontinued model so not on the website, just in stock in stores I'd imagine..

How about you look it up? Not that you're the slightest bit interested though..
#17
If i phoned them would they tell me if they had any in stock in my local store?
#18
I'll have one if they're in stock locally ---- but I won't bank on it.

No there's nothing confusing about "HD Ready". Full HD is the confusing term as it is not an industry standard definition. HD Ready 1080P is the correct definition of a TV that meets HD Ready requirements and is capable of displaying 1080P feeds. Full HD means nothing but the manufacturers use it because it means they can get away with supplying a TV with 1080P panel that is NOT HD Ready - this doesn't tend to happen these days but in the early days of LCD TVs people were buying TVs that would not work with Blu Ray players, PS3s, etc.

What would you ask to check if this is in stock at a local store?

I would ask "Hello, could you check if Digitrex 40 inch TV is in stock at my local store?" or any other variation. You don't have to be an erudite or learned person to ask, just simple language will suffice.

Just went into my local Currys (Swansea).

The TV is a discontinued model and there are none left in the UK

Sorry guys!
#28
Went to my Local PC world, they had one display model in stock, but they couldn't locate the thing, it wasn't on the shop floor :( wasted about half an hour of my life waiting for them.

It's a shame. My parents would have really loved it.
#29
Expired, 2 local Curries don't have this.

Of course you could. It's not HD Ready (720p), It's full HD (1080p). I doubt you'll get hold of one though, as there's none left in the UK, apparently.

Full HD, to all intents and purposes, is HD Ready. The correct naming is HD Ready 1080P as there isn't really a definition for Full HD - it's something concocted by the manufacturers. Since HD Ready 1080P is a superset of HD Ready, then TVs that are 720P and 1080P capable, includes HDCP via HDMI or DVI are HD Ready. There are a few other requirements but the an HDCP input is the major requirement. Naturally, 720P TVs with HDCP cannot be described as HD Ready 1080P.

can i ring my store and see if they have any in ?

Refresh rate - Poor
Contrast - Terrible

Very good price though for a cheap and cheerful tv, if you can get one
#35
I bought one of these today from the new Currys clearance store in Chesterfield and they had another 4 in stock.

See, they ARE in stock in some places.. Don't vote cold just because your local store doesn't have one! my local store hardly EVER has any good deals, it's very much just pot luck!
#38

Thanks.
#39
