OP I could kiss you right now. Thanks for this, heat added. Been looking for a holiday but everything has been so expensive. Just happened to be browsing HKUD last night and found this.

The only thing that is a bit of a **** take is they want £80 for 25kg checked in baggage. But even with that, it's still damn cheap. Just booked tickets for next friday.

Last night they were showing up as only 2 seats left at £259. Booked this morning at £226 plus the checked in baggage. Now I need to find a hotel.

I can highly recommend LoveDiving Phuket if you want a scuba course. Great people that own it (they even got us a discounted tourist trip for me and my wife (non diver) when asking for recommendations). Let me know of anyone wants more info :)

Wish this was after January. This is a fantastic price. Even if you don't take advantage of the return trip which I would advise as Thailand is a fantastic country where 2 weeks just isn't enough.

Shame, Phuket is not the "real" Thailand, more like the Benidorm of S.E. Asia

If you're doing this then make sure you also book the ferry and a stay on Phi Phi island - The Holiday Inn is relatively cheap and a marvelous place to spend a week...

Rubbish. Parts are a complete disgrace and perhaps akin to Benidorm, but the vast majority is stunning. This isn't a package holiday so I don't know why anyone would want to go close to the aforementioned.

Or simply more people fly during school holidays so prices go up.

Amazing the prices that people pay during school holidays so it subsidises it for the rest of us.

It's great!

Phuket can be a crap hole or lovely, you just need to spread your wings. Phi phi is over priced and over run, koh lak lak will get you a more chilled vibe island style.
I lived in Thailand for 6 years and travelled many other times since I returned. The fake smile is wider than ever! Just my opinion but as a newbie who doesn't speak the language it will seem genuine. Mai pen rai

Hire a car from Phuket airport and dive an hour north to khao lak. Really lovely here. Nice beaches and lots of restaurants and bars too so lots to do

Been several years since we went, but unless it changed can highly recommend Khao Lak.

Any location where you find a busy international Airport (primarily frequented by tourists) will invariably have the Benidorm effect. It's the corrupting nature of tourism, but equally most of us couldn't get to these places without such airports. Do some research and there are many beautiful places reachable after landing in Phuket.

We spent a couple of weeks at the Sarojin Resort in Khao Lak and have to say it was excellent. Small, boutique type resort with excellent grounds located right on an idyllic clean beach.

There are other larger resorts further up the beach, but the Sarojin is at the end of the strip some distance from the next resort. And in the other direction the beach stretches for some distance just lined by trees. It effectively means you're unaware of the other resorts and seems like its the only resort on the beach. Take a left out of the resort and you could walk along the beach without seeing another person.

Food was great. Theres also a beach restaurant/bar next door which did good fresh fish and was quite cheap. The Sarojin prices itself were equivalent to high street chains like Ask, so again not breaking the bank.

They had their own mini yacht for excursions, which were expensive for Thailand (but less then you'd spend on a day out in blighty). I thought paying the premium was worth it after seeing the hordes arriving on larger tours crammed on big boats, who were ferried in small groups for short trips on the national park islands, then back to the ferry while everyone else got their turn. Whereas we got on the Sarojin boat straight of the beach, in a small group of 8, they picked some nice snorkelling spots where we could snorkel at our leisure. Then took us to one of the islands for a lunch they laid out for us. They also picked a location and time where we were the only ones there, and the bigger boats only arrived as we left.

IMO if you can its worth spending more on such resorts and tours as its a far more pleasurable and less stressful experience. Particularly if you're holiday time is not very frequent and precious. We did however do other activities with small local operators (as I like to spread my money). Just pick where theres value in paying a premium and where you're ultimately only going to have a minor inconvenience by going with the smaller local operator.

The only disappointment was the water clarity in Khao Lak. Apparently due to the (then) recent Tsunami. Although I suspect it may also have something to do with the Reef being dead. Has the water cleared up since?

Having travelled extensively for both work and pleasure, I'd say Benidorm is not a comparison that came to mind. And from my research at the time it wasn't the only option within reach of Phuket.

Wish we could go, but we've got a little one now and would probably need another holiday just to recover from the long flight :/ Grab those flights if you can, just do a little research on where to stay and you'll have a holiday of a lifetime.
