Check out CoOp and Post Office also. Reviews of Direct Save put me off. Unfortunately CoOp want £60 off me as my number used to be a Cable & Wireless number 15 years ago despite it being Openreach now. Both much cheaper than BT per month though. OFCOM are looking into cheaper "broadband only" landlines but I can't see it happening any time soon.

I prefer an Openreach line so I can use override providers (18185 etc) and choose my broadband provider.
I prefer to have my line with BT so I can talk directly with them to sort any line issues out without having to rely on a third party (my adsl provider) to liaise with them.
Since dumping our landline, it's been very quiet, I don't get any junk or nuisance calls now! Seems crazy now to pay for the pleasure of that nonsense. If only it was possible in more rural areas to get broadband only, for around the cost of line rental per month.
Just rang bt, to haggle, they won't move on their line rental saver but offered me infinity 1 for £17 p/m instead of version 2 at £26.55 that I was on, and BT TV Inc HD and entertainment for £10. so saves me just over £19 per month. happy with that. it pays to haggle
Yes, the line rental is cheaper than BT, but rather dishonest of them, on their website, to compare their upfront cost with BT's Monthly payment - Direct Save Telecom from £13.50, BT £17.99 saving 25%.
The BT upfront cost works out at £16.19 per month.
