A provocative science fiction drama, District 9 boasts an original story that gets a little lost in blow-'em-up mayhem. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, District 9 begins as a mock documentary about the imminent eviction of extraterrestrials from a pathetic shantytown (called District 9). The creatures, it turns out, have been on Earth for years, having arrived sickly and starving. Initially received by humans with compassion and care, the aliens are now mired in blighted conditions typical of long-term refugee camps unwanted by a hostile, host society. With the creatures' care contracted out to a for-profit corporation, the shantytown has become a violent slum. The aliens sift through massive piles of junk while their minders secretly research weapons technology that arrived on the visitors' spacecraft. Against this backdrop is a more personal story about a bureaucrat named Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who is accidentally exposed to a DNA-altering substance. As he begins metamorphosing into one of the creatures, Wikus goes on the run from scientists who want to harvest his evolving, new parts and aliens who see him as a threat. When he pairs up with an extraterrestrial secretly planning an escape from Earth, however, what should be a fascinating relationship story becomes a series of firefights and explosions. Nuance is lost to numbing violence, and the more interesting potential of the film is obscured. Yet, for a while District 9 is a powerful movie with a unique tale to tell. Seamless special effects alone are worth seeing: the (often brutal) exchanges between alien and human are breathtaking

Some people might really think this film is great but i wouldn't waste my money on it. worst few hours of my life spent watching it
#4
Cheapest i've seen it, so heat for that. But i have to agree with k_orme, it just plain hated this film. Wanted to leave after 30 minutes, the guys accent was so bad!

This film is a classic. The plot is original and inventive, the FXs are really really well done and not OTT, its funny and also thought provoking and I cant rate it highly enough.
#6
Best film of 2009 IMHO. Refreshing to see something other than Hollywood product.

District 9 & Watchmen - love em'!
#14
Bloody prawns, the actor played a few parts in the film and he is from SA .... funny:thumbsup:
#15
Best price i've seen since release! Hoping for it to dip in price a bit more over the next few months!

For what its worth a quality film!
#16
Might as well get it at Tesco. Same price, plus you get Quidco
#17
Watched it yesterday and one of the best films made in 2009 imho.

It was firmly directed at adults, no sentimental speeches, no over-explanation of everything aimed at middle of the road thicko's...just gets on with it. There are a few minor plot holes but to no-where near the extent of most Hollywood blockbusters!!

Love the south African Accent - I though the main character was superb.

I agree the guys accent was great. He is going to play Crazy Murdoch in the new A Team movie.

I am failing to understand the heat this deal is getting. It's the same price at most of the usual places.

A whole 5p cheaper at Asda and with Quidco.
#22
Great film but I would rather pay less for the DVD. Not voting btw.

A very good film, quite unique. However if you have a blu-ray player-DO NOT BUY THE DVD! I say this because this movie has one of the best bluray transfers I have seen to date. Absolutely amazing. Better still you can pick this up for about £10.00 if your looking for other movies too and use the mymermory BOGOF offer. I bought district 9 and moon for £19.99 a while ago - which makes the bluray the same price as the dvd.

We seem to be in the minority here, I thought it was vastly overrated and hugely disappointing. It was a great opportunity to make some interesting comments on apartheid and the topics surrounding it, and for about the first 30 minutes, you think it's succeeding, then it just descends into all the regular hollywood nonsense, car chases, a clichéd plot and a giant robot catching a rocket.

What could have been a really fascinating film turns into another hollywood turd.

Thats exactly why its genius! You expect it to go into some cleaver commentary on social issues but it throws a curve ball and turns into the best live action 'Mech' fight I have ever seen in any film ever (and iv seen quite a lot). I heard good things about it well before release and then purposely avoided all the trailers and any info on the plot etc and then when I saw it I had no clue what was going to happen. I can normally tell you how a film will end by about 20 mins in and I had no clue where this was going all the way through.

Cant rate this highly enough!!!!

This is a movie. Not a documentary on apartheid or an "interesting comment on apartheid".One could say Avatar is the red indian story all over again but with a happy ending. Not wishing to be rude or abrupt but apartheid was and is apartheid ,if you want interesting comments on subjects I suggest you watch true documentaries and dont get confused with movies that are meant to entertain and have subtle and not so subtle messages
