From producer Peter Jackson and director Neill Blomkamp comes a stunningly original sci-fi thriller, throwing viewers headlong into an escalating conflict between alien refugees and Johannesburg locals. Only one man, hunted and hounded, will come to understand what it truly means to be an outsider.

1982, Johannesburg, South Africa: A large alien spaceship hovers above the city carrying hundreds of thousands of ailing extraterrestrial creatures that the population of the 'Joburg' would soon come to unaffectionately refer to as 'Prawns'.

Twenty-eight years later and tensions are mounting. The `Prawns' live in a militarized ghetto zone called District 9 where they are confined in squalor. Munitions company Multi-National United is contracted to remove the extraterrestrial element with force to a distant compound. Unexpectedly, bureaucrat Wikus van der Merwe supervises the military charge. However, when Wikus discovers an unknown substance and accidentally ingests it, he soon becomes the most hunted man in Johannesburg. Alone and stripped of his former life, Wikus' only allies are the creatures he once sought to banish.

Great film, I've seen it about 4 times and don't feel the need to buy it now.

Great price for a great film.

Fantasic film. Agreed that it starts like a BBC drama (which isn't a bad thing for TV but isn't big-screen quality) but builds into something superb. Looking forward to a sequel (if there is one).
#14
Taken a punt at £3, as missed it on the screens the first time round; heat added :)
#15

I saw this on Sky, not really knowing anything about it.

It is bizarre- at first like someone said it is like a Doctor Who type thing set in South Africa, but then it develops into this all guns blazing (literally) sci fi / special effect extravaganza. It looks like they started out making it on a budget, then got a cash injection!

It has fairly poignant points to make about racism, and is actually based extremely loosely on a true story- save the aliens in this film were actually black South Africans in the real story.

It is a very unique film and I have to say one of the best I have seen in the last few years.

Thanks oh hamster one :)

Good film, but am I the only one who found the main character really annoying? I couldn't wait for him to shut up.
#21
Thanks just ordered, not seen this one.

I got halfway through this and turned it off as I thought it was quite boring, like a spoof documentary. Having read all your comments I will dig it out and give it another go, maybe it does turn into a good film.
#23
It is a bit slow and I know what you mean about the spoof documentary, I didn't like that aspect either, I also didn't like the main character / actor, he was far too annoying. It does have a good action scene near the end involving lasers, rockets and a robot suit, you'd like that.
#24
Such a good film, well worth it at that price.
#25
Great movie at a great price :)

Actually I think the spoof documentary and the fact that wikus is annoying makes the film... I watched it on a high recommendation from a friend and yes when it starts off I was like, hummm, but when you watch the whole film (which does get going btw) and put it all in context I think its a superb film and one of my faves.

I think its refreshing to see a film made from a different angle and done how its supposed to be done (and far better IMHO) than films like blair witch or paranormal activity which ruined the genre.

There's talk of "district 10" would be interesting to see if it gets made :)

just bought it. Thanks OP.
#28
So that's what that little '9' symbol means.

Cheers, OP!

I agree with you, it's something different to the typical crap big budget 'blockbuster' that comes out. You've got to love the little prawn.
