tutorial looks fairly straightforward - good option for those who don't have elite 120gb drive already

Q. are you limited to a 120gb or can you install a larger one?

You have to use the 120gb one. It has to be the exact model unfortunately as the 360 checks.

cheers SunTzu, I'll stick with my standard 120gb then
#4
Yeh it's a shame really, would be nice to have a big fat 500gb attached :-)

Becareful when purchasing if u are using it for your XBOX360 upgrade, be aware i purchased this HD, found it is not compatible with software to upgrade for use with ur xbox, its a different variation, i recieved: WD1200BEVS-00VAT0, not the WD1200BEVS-LAV0 version which is required.

noticed that xbl will be down this monday for updates - guess this is related to the new look xbl and the ability to upload games to your hd ?

hmmm, not sure this is true. If it is you could always send it back i suppose. The model number is the same though so it should work, certainly the one i bought did! Maybe you could ring them and confirm first. Or buy it elsewhere as they are widely available.

80% of the fun I get out of my xbox is on xbox live, just not worth risking being banned for me, good price though...

You won't get banned, it's not a mod! :giggle:

... Afraid thats not strictly true m8. XBL is down for maintaince on Monday (although probably in preperation for the future update) and not technically down for 'updates'. MS still have yet to give a release date for the Fall update. Rumour has it that the update will arrive sometim in November.

I did this as a project well over a year ago. The hard drive cost around £45 at that time but it worked a treat and is still going strong.
#12
Thanks for this will give it a go:thumbsup:

Hot deal for those sick and tired of being ripped off by microsoft. Amazing to think they get away with charging more than this for a 20gb drive.

Why are people always so scared of being banned from xbox live, my 360 is flashed and i have been playing on live for around a year, nothing has ever happened!

^ prepare to be banned come November - but all is not lost, replacement Arcades are just £103

nice guide to getting more hard drive space for your 360

Its pretty ridiculous having to pay so much for a 120GB drive when you could just do this

Good deal. Is the only reason for a bigger hard drive just for downloaded content (demos, movies etc)? Also, is there definitely no chance of getting banned for this? Thanks.

Yeah - in the next update (somebody mentioned November), you'll be able to copy stuff from your PC/USB media to the XBOX hard-drive though.

Mines been flashed for over two years now. And I'm still on live...

BUT...

Plenty of people have been banned. I'm not sure whether there will be any more runs of bans to be honest, as the last one resulted in a few legitimate people being banned - and MS backtracked them all.

But yeah, not being able to copy stuff from my PC/USB is my single biggest issue with the 360 atm. I have loads of divx films etc I'd love to copy over to the 360 HD to keep on there, but I can't do that.

I'd also love to be able to see the 360 HD over a network, so I can dump films directly to it. But that'll never happen... :)

does anyone know if you can buy the cable for moving stuff from old to new with this or would i have to buy a memory card aswell?

This is not in any way judgemental (Im no saint on the "trial" software front!) however, you could apply the same argument to house insurance. By your logic I have effectively "wasted" thousands as I didnt "need" insurance. The reason I have it is that I dont want to lose everything if my house goes up in flames. Its a similar point with the 360, I love mine and I LOVE xblive, do I feel good that all my software is legit??? nope!! do I have a problem with others using pirate games? again, nope!! but I do like the fact that Im not going to lose my account and/ or have to buy a new 360? DEFINITELY YES!!!

Now if it were more like the DS & R4 situation, hmmmmm................... :whistling:

Anyway, recent news stories (which could be MS spin) suggest that you are living on borrowed time. IMHO 360 without xblive is like a ferrarri without an engine for most games and thats why Im bothered about being banned. :-D

Um I have a 160gb hard drive in mine, you can use more than 120gb (unless I'm mistaken... possibly) - I used the evox installer disk and there was a 'large hard drive' option on install.
#24
Sorry for being a little slow, I haven't done anything like this since I upgraded my old xbox's HDD to a larger model (a long, long time ago now)

Does this tool allow you to copy across all the data from your old drive onto the new larger one?

Sounds like you are getting your Xbox and Xbox 360 mixed up?!?!?

Tomturd - I think you are talking about original xbox - not the 360

No, you need to borrow/buy a HD transfer kit or a memory card.

The transfer cable can be found on ebay or buy/sell forums or just borrow it or a memory card from someone.

Sorry to be a pedant but this is a cheap harddrive "replacement" is it not?

Those who were lured by the cheap arcade pack will still need at least a 20gb ms hdd for the shell/connectors you are replaceing the drive in.
#30
You can also purchase this drive from Scan (£33.33) which is ideal for those of us with free delivery and those who hate eBuyer :).

Yup. The message from Microsoft says :

"Xbox Live and Xbox.com will be offline on Monday, 9/29/2008 from 12:01 AM PST up to 24 hours. This service maintenance will allow us to bring some exciting new features and functionality to you this holiday through the New Xbox Experience."

They mention a holiday, so I expect that actual change to the new interface will take place on one of the following days...

Columbus Day (2nd Monday in October)
Veteran's Day (11th November)
Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November)

Can't wait...

True. A second hand 20GB 360 HDD can be had for £20 - £25, sell the internal drive for £10 which makes it £10 - £15 for the enclosure.

I think thanksgiving is on the 27th November, it's always the fourth thursday of November. But can't wait to see the new update either.

Finally, for those QQing about not modding their 360 because they love xbox live too much to not want to risk getting their console banned...

Should you get banned, just buy a cheap arcade - £105 is nothing compared to the cash saved... ^^ Less than the cost of three games? Plug this in for your live gaming, plug the other in for your offline stuff.

Not that I condone piracy, its illegal. Neither do I condone the ridiculous prices they charge for games. That should also be illegal. If they were cheaper, £20ish, I guess there would be very little point in piracy.

apart from the odd "must have" game (such as COD4) I just sit & wait for the prices to drop & then buy them, usually sub £20

may as well ask this here (apologies for slight off-topic btw)
If I bought an additional xbox to play upstairs, could I transport my existing Gamertag onto that one also & play on either & xbox live ?
( I maybe answering my own question, but can you just take the HDD off & connect on another machine to do this?)
#37
silly question but which MSDos download do you use to do this as there are quite a few choices?

You can store a gamertag on one hard drive at a time, and you can use this hard drive on as many consoles as you want.

presumably its the dos version associated with your operating system on the pc you will be connecting the hdd to when you do initial set-up - ie XP or vista

edit: actually after reading the guide again it isn't too clear is it??
