when I got this I felt ripped off at the 500mbps description as it has a 100base-T Ethernet port, meaning it was no faster than the 200mbps with 100base-T it was meant to replace.

of course if you're happy with a slow network these are fine

You're assuming 200mbps adaptors can do 200mbps - they can't do that or anything like it.

In the real world over real house/office wiring, 200mbps powerline adaptors might manage 50mbps - maybe

500mbps adaptors might see 80mbps on the right wiring/a good day

I've never managed to get those speeds consistently over a few different adaptors/in a few different places tho - maybe other people have amazing wiring but as 90% of what I do is Internet based, even a 200mbps adaptor exceeds what I get from that.

Certainly explains why you don't need a Gigabit socket on them - although you can certainly get adaptors which have that...

I already said they're fine if you don't mind a slow network so all you did was repeat that and incorrectly guess that I'm assuming 200mbps can do 200mbps when I clearly said they had 100 base Ethernet ports

No, your description read like these always offer 100% of the speed advertised. therealjohnpeat clearly explained why the lack of gigabit is not an issue.

Don't try backtracking now when it's clear for all to see.

it's painfully slow when copying lots of large file around a network.

Wouldn't make a difference if they had 1000mbps ports. They'd still be slower than 100base-t.

So I understand having looked into this again. At best the numbers are misleading if not flat out false advertising. if I bought a car that was advertised as a 5l V8 and I got home to find that it was really a 1.2 8v with an ECU that could run a 5l V8 the salesman would be learning to walk again.

I gave these away and replaced my main connection with a 5 quid cable and can now copy files at 75Mb/s across my network (that's 600mbps).

Well I don't feel the need to compare d**k sizes like some on this thread, suffice to say that I know what I am talking about and:

a) These are perfectly adequate for the vast majority of people on HKUD, so don't be taken in by all the techie nonsense on here (and if they aren't good enough for you, you won't need a lecture on their technical specs on here, because you'll know that anyway), and
b) they are a good deal for most on that basis.

Thanks to the original poster for a good deal anyway, despite the thread descending into techie hell! :p

Check out the ubove,
If you have a spare router hanging about you could use that with the £14.99 kit to save money.

I have these and the coil whine on them is absolutely awful. Sent them back and got a pair with identical whine. I only switch them on when I want to use my PC now because the noise is unbearable. Luckily I have headphones on when I use the PC.

I would avoid them. I'm on the lookout for some better quality ones.
