Donate unused easymobile credit to charity!

As I'm sure everyone knows, easyMobile is closing on the 13th December, and any promotional credit you've earned will be lost at that point, and plenty of us have a LOT of that.

But there's a way to make good use of it by donating it to charity via premium SMS. There's a catch though - many of the charity premium SMS numbers can't be used on an easyMobile account unless you've got autotop up activated, which most people won't have.

But there are a few charities that do work:

DOG to 84858 - £3 dogs for the disabled

SANDS to 84858 - £3 http://www.fundraisingforsands.org/text.htm - supporting parents who have lost babies

TTWA to 84858 - £3 woman's aid for women/children affected by domestic violence

NSE to 84858 - £3 http://www.epilepsynse.org.uk/ - finding a cure for epilepsy

CVOC to 84858 - £3 child victims of crime

DOW to 84858 - £3 The Down Syndrom Education trust

RHI to 84858 - £3 Save the rhino

Remember when calculating how many text messages to send, you have to factor in the cost of the text message (about 10p) as well as the £3!

Please post below if you find others that do work, but be careful - you can only know if it's worked by logging into your easymobile account and CHECKING THAT THE FULL AMOUNT HAS BEEN DEDUCTED FROM YOUR BILL - even the ones that don't work will give you a nice text message back saying 'thank you for your donation', but will only charge you ~10p and the charity won't get the money.

(If you've got non-promotional credit, you can get that refunded to you by closing your account.)

It's for a great cause, so please vote this hot people! :-D

Also:

84858 BREAST - £3 Breast Cancer Research

84858 HHIV - £3 Hope HIV charity work in Africa

btw, credit is due to the good people over at MSE for some of this information: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=278583 - but be careful as I've tested a lot of numbers in that thread and 84858 is the only one I got to work from my easymobile sim :(

That's a good idea! Cheers!

There's also the RSPCA:
Help the RSPCA to continue this life-saving work by donating to the RSPCA today. To donate £1, simply text GIFT to 60022.
For text terms and conditions, click here.

Not tested it myself yet.

Lots of people only have joy with the 84858 ones.

Those ones are run by the well known "justgiving" site.

There's also

84858 BREAST - Breast Cancer Research

84858 HHIV - Hope HIV charity work in Africa

Thanks, thepearce, I've added them to the main article.

Repo, if you can confirm RSPCA does deduct from your bill correctly I'll add that too.

thanks for this thread.. i will donate whatever is left on my sim at the begining of next week.

i had the sim for my son. and out of £33 (it cost me £3 for the sim) at the moment we still have £14 left, so whatever is on there will go to charity.

thanks missysx - they're all good causes :-D

It doesn't look like the RSPCA one I posted above works properly. The transaction charge just shows as a regular SMS.

Can anyone tell me is the 13th Dec the last day we can use the creditwe have left? Thanks
#11
You're right, it's the 13th:

"you will not be able to use your shimmerbright.com (formerly easyMobile.com) service in the UK from midnight (24:00) on 13th December 2006"

have just sent 2 texts donating most of the remaining credit to Breast cancer research and then i've requested the fresh mobile sim, so that it closes the account.
#13
well i feel all warm and fuzzy. i just spent 20mins texting 35 texts to various charities on the 84858 number.

dont forget, less than 48hours to spend your credits.
#14
Thanks for the reminder on this one :santa: Also for the original post jogu :santa:

The breast cancer one definately works, so that's good.
only problem i'm having is actually tracking how much money i have left as the website isn't realtime.
does anyone know a simple way of getting my current balance, without missing the midnight deadline?

Also, it'd be worth ordering the free FRESH sim-card and taking the free £10 credit for charity too. you only get £15 if you top-up.

thanks hairychad!

Remember people - last day today - only hours left!
