Writer/director Neil Marshall earned the respect of horror devotees with his first two features, DOG SOLDIERS and THE DESCENT, refreshing and scary twists on the werewolf and expedition-gone-wrong genres. Where those works exemplified a respect for pure horror, devoid of the tension-spoiling comedy that infects most fright films, DOOMSDAY is Marshall's love letter to the post-apocalyptic action-exploitation films of the 1980s. Bubbling over with action, gore, and dark humour, his third film has all the bases covered for a fun and knowing viewing experience. After a deadly plague results in the quarantine of Scotland (in a scene reminiscent of I AM LEGEND), a wall is built around the country preventing anyone from going in or out. Thirty years later, the British government believes everyone within the wall to be dead, but when they find signs of life and learn of the possibility of a cure, a team of specially trained agents led by Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra) become the first outsiders to venture inside the country since the epidemic. They discover that there are plenty of survivors who have splintered into fierce, warlike tribes, living in a lawless society where cannibalism and murder are the order of the day.
Astute viewers will have a blast playing 'spot the influence', with loving nods to ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, ALIENS, 28 DAYS LATER, and the MAD MAX films. At the film's halfway point, Marshall switches gears, transforming the film from a punk-informed futuristic action film into a medieval-style chase film, utilising Scotland's castles and sumptuous green landscapes to the fullest. Mitra is an exciting physical presence as Eden, a female version of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK's Snake Plissken, and the great supporting cast includes Bob Hoskins and Malcolm McDowell.

Love it or hate it type film - I loved it!

£3 instore btw.

Really bad film, it's like Mad Max only really really s#it. The acting and story line are complete cack and not even in a 'so bad it's funny' kinda way. And it's supposed to be set in Scotland but the majority was obviously shot in South Africa so it looks totally ridiculous. Not voted either way.

Superb film. Great price,

So according to the HMV blurb Dog Soldiers was devoid of "tension-spoiling comedy" - clearly written by someone who hasn't even seen the film then! Gotta love advertising people...
Thought this film was pretty entertaining btw, OK it's practically a John Carpenter cover version but on those terms it's a good one!

Ditto. Watching this film is probably the most pointless way to waste an hour and a half of your life, and that's including other pointless activities like ball scrathing and biting your nails.

Descent was great though.

So much film snobbery! :p

It's an enjoyable throwaway kinda' film that harks back to those post apocalyptic cheapo italian mad max rip-offs. Not every film has to have a messege, point, agenda, lesson, etc, etc.

Very hot deal at this price in my opinion :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I'm all for cheesy zombie apocalypse films and love a good over the top action movie but this one just blows. It's not so much that it has a totally ridiculous plot and really bad acting but the way they tried to pull it off and take it all a bit too seriously. It just flat out fails. My opinion of course :p.

Yep, good price, **** film! :)

I gave it 30 minutes then binned it. Literally.

tension spoiling comedy - comedy that spoils the tension.

The film was incredibly derivative: a badly done mess.

and i say this as a fan of dog soldiers & descent.

so many bad parts i can think of: untouched bentley, cannibals dancing to a fine young cannibals song that didn't fit the scene.

You'd need to be mentally deficient to find this anything other than a terrible, terrible dissapointment. £2.99 for a reason

AND it was filmed in South Africa, apart from one scene. (I nearly moved onto that st.)

I looked forward to this film when it was in production and was gutted when I watched it - its basically Mad Max and a smattering of Escape from New York but done with a poor script, average acting at best and some dodgy FX in parts as well....

Really bad film that I wanted to be good - I wouldn't ever watch it again unless I was rewarded with a briefcase full of cash, non sequential notes in various denominations. Oh and Angelina Jolie. Always the Jolie.

Well, I'm obviously a retard cos I liked it. Thought it was fun and over the top.

Just a bad film......am i right in thinking a bently torbo couldn't out run some old heap at the end? think i was numb by that time.

I take it you're not a fan of the rather delicious Rhona Mitra, who played the lead role? (Eden Sinclair, if my memory serves me)

Rhona also played Lara Croft before Angie did (and at least Rhona is a British actress, lol)

In case anyone is still debating whether or not to get this movie, here are some movie shots of our delectable Rhona. Enjoy!

The film could be described using the same word as what I'm going to do over those photos.

its one thing to pay homage to a classic by given a little nod to it, but this film was just rip off after rip off. ,there wasnt a scene, character or even line thats isnt ripped off, not to mention the plot. characters are boring and wooden , killed off before you even remember their names , there is no suspense , all the actors are poor , manly tv actors and it looks cheap especially the gay costumes they wear. and most of it makes little sense. real dogs dinner of a movie. cant believe its by the same guy who did dogs soldiers and the decent.

if you havent seen, mad max, the road warrior, mad max 3, Aliens, Escape from new york , Escape from L.A, 28 days later, 28 weeks later gladiator, then maybe it might entertain but then it will just spoil these classics when u do see them .
#23
One of my fave films ! Love it

Rhona is ok (well a tad better than just ok I guess) but even if she ran around totally in the buff for the entire film - and there were no other people in the film...it would still only scrape 5/10 at best!
