April 1945, a nation awaits its... Downfall

Not since G.W. Pabst's 1956 effort, 'Letste Akt' (The Last Act) has a German film attempted to tackle the subject of their most famous leader, Adolf Hitler. Breaking a long-standing taboo, the director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, has made a film that has sparked much debate in Germany and the rest of the world.

Downfall features an astonishing performance by Bruno Ganz as history's most notorious figure. Providing an unprecedented and controversial insider's perspective, the film is a gripping insight into the madness and desperation of Hitler in the final hours of the war as the Russian Army closes a ring around Berlin. Beautifully photographed and brilliantly acted, this tour de force is at once dramatic, harrowing and remarkably authentic.

The basis for the screenplay by writer-producer Bernd Eichinger came from two key sources: Joachim Fest's book "Inside Hitler's Bunker: The Last Days of The Third Reich", the recognition that the horrifying epic of Hitler and his people during his twelve years in power was reflected in those last twelve days in the bunker; and the memoirs of Hitler's private secretary, Traudl Junge, in Melissa Mueller's book, "Until The Final Hour: Hitler's Last Secretary", which provided an invaluable insight into the character of the man, and those final, fatal few days of the war.

Fell asleep half way through, it's so boring. I wonder how much more we can squeeze out of other countries dark history before we take a look at our own.

Idiot, exactly the sort of rubbish that makes my blood boil. Nobody should forget such sacrifices no matter what country they fought for! Or maybe you're one of these people who can't appreciate subtitled films...

The movie is excellent in every single way and gives an insight into what actually happened to end the War based on the journals and testimony of those present at the time. It's also coming on Blu Ray soon for those who are interested although it's quite expensive at the moment.

Good find!

Never heard of it, but I'll take a punt........Hitler is a strange and almost mythical charector, hideous, nauseating, yet compelling.

Excellent film, needs to be shown on bbc1 or itv1 so people will see it who would never think of watching it normally.

Was already on TV, can't remember exactly either C4 or More4. No information I didn't already know, it's made in German with subtitles. I really think their are better movies about Hitler, but I seem to be in the minority here. You could watch a 15 minutes documentary to get the same information. As for drama? ........ It's almost 3hrs long!

I don't think you'll be disappointed - outstanding film. I paid around £20 a few years back from Amazon Germany for this, before released in the UK. Worth every penny then and fantastic deal on offer now

Charting the last few days of Hitler in his bunker in Berlin, this is a superb film. Engrossing, chilling and enlightening, showing how completely bonkers the German govt was in those final days.

This movie isn't for everyone, but if you appreciate a well crafted, well acted and true story then this is money well spent.

Err, it never won any Oscars. It was however nominated for an Oscar, but lost out to 'Mar adentro'.

But yeah, it's an incredibly powerful film regardless of those academy snobs.

Not as cheap - but just as good and interesting is http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/3305102/The-Lives-Of-Others/Product.html "Das Leben der Anderen" (The lives of others). Which is set in East Germany in the 80s and covers a stasi agent watching people. (This did get an academy award!)

Both great films. Sehr gut!

OMG -Boring? :whistling:

What exactly did you expect to see? Hitler surviving and Germany winning the war or did you forget to put the subtitles on lol

Stick with Rambo as probably more to your taste

Check out Bruno Ganz in Vitus (another acting masterclass).
