Not the cheapest basic hosting package around and it only has PHP scripting. You can get a similar PHP package for far less.

Thanks to all for your input - glad I posted (even if it went rather chilly), as at least it has helped point me in the direction of things i have missed !
I suggest unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk really good prices.
Thinking outside the box a little.

If you need a really, really basic, static site you could always consider setting up a dropbox account & a domain redirector and hosting the site that way?

I've set a couple up that way in the past and had a dedicated Gmail account which forwards anything to my main one.

Just a thought, and some links:

buckyo - thanks for the advice - tbh, with the traffic we get (minimal) it is about having a web presence at the moment, not doing anything clever or fancy with it, bells and whistles may be good, or even good value, but we just need to put our site up there and leave it alone for a couple of years !
Dreamhost was one of the first hosts I used. A bit of downtime, when I needed to be online for a project, meant I moved. I've with 2 hosts at the moment, Evo Hosting (UK based for my main sites) and CrocWeb (Canadian based, I think, for others).

As others have said, it really depends on what you need it for. If you are new to hosting I'd pick a host that uses cPanel. It's an easy to use, with plenty of help online, control panel for pretty much everything, adding domains, setting up emails, installing Wordpress, etc.

Oh, and if you decide to go with Dreamhost you could use code SMALLCLONE for $90 off your first year.

Any tips which hosting company to choose for a wordpress blog?
The reason for my posts are purely based on, I saw them on Kotaku, did a search on here for them but did not see them so I thought I'd share x3. I use Dreamhost and I think its great ^^
and the price after 12 months? I'm currently paying about £14 a year for hosting but could maybe do with unlimited bandwidth and space
Dreamhost is a large and successful hosting company - have been using them myself for years without problems. Recommended.

You get what you pay for with hosting...
Agreed, but struggling to find a decent web hosting service for the charity I work for who don't have bundles of money but need 24/7 total reliability, uptime etc.

Any recommendations please?

100% uptime probably isn't going to happen on a budget host, but they should be able to manage 99.5% +, also look into using cloudflare with whoever you choose.
I'll second TSOHost
My vote goes to TSOHost hands down. £14.99 per year.

Hehe I see you posted the "xxx/porn" domain too. Presume this deal is the one you were meant to be looking for prior to posting ;)
I used to have a site on Dreamhost & never had an issue. Uptime was great, & communication was always light hearted. I ran a forum on it too. Unless they've changed over the last couple of years, I'd rexommend.
If you want quality service go to Vidahost, I have been using them for years and they are highly recommended on UK Business Forums.
So that's a no to Dreamhost then abigsmurf?

Have quite a lot of sites, currently with Hostgator reseller, don't need reseller any more and havent for a while so am paying more than I need to and now it's $30pm instead of $25 but, don't need an unreliable host.
They can't and don't offer unlimited anything
They can't and don't offer 100% uptime (expect downtime to always be classed as "scheduled maintenance", even if it was completely unscheduled and there was no warning of downtime)

They can however randomly decide that your website is too CPU intensive, too memory intensive, using too much bandwidth or running the kind of site they want you to pay more money for (most of the time this is sites with a forum but it can be for any number of innocuous types of sites).

Another happy DreamHost customer here, been a customer for 7+ years.
I've used dreamhost since 1998; an excellent company, good communications, and half the price you'll pay for UK hosting (or less). Even domain registration is cheaper than through any British company. In the US, web hosting is highly competitive, with loads of offers - over here, it's stitched up by a few companies, and they charge too much.

Unlimited diskspace, unlimited bandwidth... Two phrases you don't want to see on a hosting plan if you value reliability and performance.

Signed up with these on their recent year deal. Not that good. Moved my sites away after a couple of days.

Thanks for that... I'll try to remember to downgrade them to "...but others have had problems" when talking about them in future :)

I've decided that I'll only switch to an unlimited storage account when they invent an unlimited storage harddisk.

Actually, if I remember correctly my account with dreamhost predates the switch to "unlimited" and I resisted the temptation to "upgrade". Thus, I have a deal in the form of n gigs storage plus m gigs bandwidth, with both rising year on year. It would be interesting to see what would happen if I started to use it: I suspect it would be more difficult to disappear me than it would on a deal in the form of "unlimited"* - I'm not that mean, though :)

I was with Dreamhost a few years ago on an $11 a year offer. Left at the end of the deal, and they kept hounding me by email for full payment for the next year even though I cancelled.

fatcow.com (similar to dreamhost, very friendly techies when I needed them)

If you dont like this company, please can you say why and which hosting sites you prefer.
This lot works out at £44 a year (for those who don't have a calculator handy). I prefer fasthostingdirect who have a 2 years for £19.99 product

stinkybeard
Have found their servers to be unbearably slow and know of people who have suffered hacked sites on their shared servers. Having said that, I know other people who are happy with their 'service'.

You pays yer money you takes yer choice.

spheric

one.com (*very* cheap, but read the bumpf, there's a "no big files" policy)
34sp.com (UK-based, quite cheap and good reliability record)
fatcow.com (similar to dreamhost, very friendly techies when I needed them)
site5.com (similar to dreamhost again. techies were quick and efficient when I needed them)

One thing I will mention is that most US-based hosts schedule their server maintenance during UK business hours (its night-time for them, so they think its quiet). If you're concerned about such things, it might be worth talking to prospective hosts first.

Thanks you guys,

Do you reckon I should delete this post then??

Same problem here.
Is this deal still available? I can't preview the price before entering credit card info
You have somewhat missed the point here i think.

Nowhere does this claim to be a dedicated server for hosting a huge website with thousands of concurrent users.

Anyone who is capable of building and maintaining a website of that size wouldnt consider for a second hosting one on a shared server.

This is every bit a great deal for anyone who wants to host a small to medium website. What the package is DESIGNED to do.

Further more they will not just "shut you down"

If your website is consistently requiring enough server time to warrant migrating to a dedicated server they will do so, for free AND give you a month for free so you can figure out exactly what specs you need for the server.

I dont see how anyone could ask for more for less than £6
Serj
What? Basing that upon what exactly?

I know for a fact that is not true.

Bandwidth is cheap.

EDIT:

Thought i should provide some extra with that, I contacted them a few months ago asking what they consider excessive bandwidth to be, because i anticipated an upturn in BW usage. I was looking at around 1TB for that month... i quote

"A few TBs is nothing, dont worry about it"

I didnt... and i neednt have.

Traffic isn't only bandwidth. On shared servers traffic causes CPU spikes and high memory usage.

That's when your traffic starts to affect other customers resulting in them pulling the plug.

I use Reaper Productions - a small host, but offers packages from 79p per month or even less if you pay yearly. My friend hosts a £10,000 /month turnover e-commerce store with them too and never had any problems so far. http://www.reaperproductions.co.uk - found them on my local car club website as they offered 25% off listed prices for life using a coupon on the website.
orderd looks good enough for 6.12

This is just what I needed but the only annual payment option I saw when signing up was 1 year for $9.95 a MONTH. Does the '777' code kick in after the 2 week trial period? This was entered into the 'promotional code referral' field at the signup stage.

Within my new account settings with Dreamhost, in 'Manage Account', under the main heading of 'Billing', the current plan is set to $119.40 yearly ($9.95 per month), (Discounted to $9.24 for you first year!). Is this what you were referring to when you said 1 year's hosting is £6.12? I don't think that is the case as it seems I'll be paying $9.24 each month, not a one-off payment for an entire 12 months.

I hope I'm wrong so please clarify that.

Hmm, it now says:
(Hurry, sale ends 3/23/2010 at 11:59PM PST!)

Am I being overly suspicious or is there a bit of high-pressure sales going on?
Wow, this is very hot ! speed not too bad neither, definitely worth it!
I want a fast hosting, currently looking between this and UK2.

UK2 definitely will be faster - I'm still trying to justify whether 10 times the price is worth the speed though.
Good deal for the price, I got this same deal a couple months back. Majority of complaints are from web hosting newbs and from historical problems. The only gripe I have is that their pipe is slow, generally maximg out at only 300kbs up and down. Be careful of the renewl fee which will be steep and change domain registrar before the 1 year is up. They host a 70gb website of mine and haven't complaied about my use either, but it was tedious uploading it. They also give shell access which is handy.

For the price it's a pretty sweet deal.

so far so good. Lots of apps that can be added easily. Allows for google apps connection and gmail using domain name. It also offers WebDAV for those that need it (namely me for research backups).
Just migrating all my files over from a free host (hosthelpers.com) to Dreamhost and all is working well.

Didn't take too long for the DNS to propagate for me either. I'm really pleased with it. :D
Good price, all though I hate there custom cPanel. I used to have a dreamhost account until they accidentally billed me several times then sent me an email saying is was due to someone having fat fingers. I prolly would have seen the funny side if it hadn't sent me overdrawn

i wondered that too, but after the whole process has gone through, login to the control panel. scroll down to the bottom of the left menu and click billing. youll then see a screen close to post #1 - i think they only bill you the £5.something after the 2 week trial period
