They seem to do a different version of this every two weeks.

Still - its HOT if you want to convert a server for home use and can tolerate the noise.

Just crying out to have Ubuntu added.
#2
Tempted to make this my media server with a little extra ram and some cheap big hard drives.
#3
LMAO

I cant believe how frequently this gets posted to HUKD.

Unfortunately I will also expect people to ask the same questions as they every time this server has been posted.
#4
It is good to have this type of special offer every 2- 3 months. One can never have enough cheap computers! One for Apple Mac, One for Linux, One for Windows Xp, One for Windows Vista then one for torrent use only... blah blah

Amazing i have been on the search for a home server this week and i missed this deal before and the dell ones that always appear...

Will be ordering one shortly, so thanks to the guy who posted it much appreciated - and to the guy who commnted this is posted a lot, well if it was not posted i would have missed it so i am very grateful...

If you want to complain go and complain to the people who post up about reduced beer in sainsburys or their local netto..."only 5 left in store in lancashire....".

As far as I can tell, this model is being end-of-lined and will quickly become hard to find at this price, and then the 'G5' model will be the only one available for considerably more. (I'd avoid the ML110/ML115 G5 models, they've been making my life hell this week.)

There's several places that might be cheaper than this, if you can find them with stock.

The timing's annoying, I was planning to buy one of these in two weeks when I get my bonus!
#11
i bought one of these and it is a great price. the only thing you have to watch out for is the pci slots are not ''standard' layout
#12
Intersting just found this, not for me however could interest someone?

I see windows home server is about £90 - anyone know if this server would be the ideal hardware to use WHS on?

Or would you recommend some open source equivalent? I would basically just want to use the device for backing up all my PC's to and to serve my music and film collection to the house.

Thanks for your advice guys.

The kit will be more than adequate for starters, just add more disks as you fill em.

If your PCs run Microsoft OS's then WHS is brilliant as it'll back them up automatically. I had to restore a knackered PC due to the XP SP3 bug and it brought it back to the lunchtime backup that same day!
The data corruption issue in WHS has been fixed too...

If you purchase this server AND management card (ILO) and software at the same time, then you can claim the money back for the card and s/w. See link…

Is it simple to add more RAM and bigger Hard drive? Please can someone recommend something on a site like ebuyer that will be suitable for expanding RAM to 1Gb and Hard drive to 500gb. I would like to use this in a small office environment, so would you say that Windows Home server is good for someone inexperienced like me that does not want to fork out on major IT maintenance and support people (you should see the crazy quotes PC worlds have been giving me to deploy and support and server for a small 3 person office!!) ...

Really tempted with this. Basically my main desktop PC has died recently. Considered rebuilding but the cost goes up and i really can't be arsed building another machine.

I'm after a machine to download with and to store all my HD videos on so that I can stream them over the network. I'm aware i'll need more ram and a couple more hard disks, but once i've done that will this machine be adequate? Won't be playing any games on it at all or anything majorly intensive.

Thanks!

This will be fine for you're needs. You couldn't build this for this price anyway and the 3yr next day warranty is a bonus.

Vishy, I'd put at least another 2 gb ram in this and not the cheapest I can find either.
I think the 2gb ocz kit at ebuyer is a great buy
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/116755

500 GB Samsung drives seem to be the cheapest at the moment just over £40, there's been deals posted here recently. There's been a few comments about reliability issues though so you may be better off paying a bit more for a Western Digital drive.

There's a lot of info on the previous threads about this server.

This one's a different spec but similar.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/189179/hp-proliant-ml115-micro-tower-1-way/

A couple of things to note are

A - this is NOT noisy
B-the PCI slot is 3.3V (took me a bit of time to get my head around this:thinking:)

Sillycib - thanks for your response. Really appreciate it.

One more question - I quite liked the concept of remotely accessing the file server from another computer in the office so that I can just run the file server in the corner without needing monior and keyboard (we have limited space!) ... is this something that can be easily setup on this server if Windows Home Server or Windows Server 2003 is installed on it?

Also, I was interested to note that you said this is NOT a noisy machine. This is contrary to all the feedback from others on here, many of whom say Dell make nice quite systems (I can only speak of their home systems, which are wonderfully quiet) ... is this really a quiet server?

Windows server can be remotely accessed using the built-in remote desktop, you just need to enable it then grant access to the user accounts needing access.
There's also a remote management card cashback deal where you effectively get the card for free, I don't know anyhing about the card but the claim form link is on the misco link posted earlier if you want to have a look.

I don't know if the noise feedback was due to the earlier model having some differences to this one, some comments were also about the ml110 which is a completely different server.
This is only noisy at start up for a few seconds then it's no noisier than a standard desktop.

I don't suppose anyone knows the yes/no answer to these 2 questions. There is a lot of conflicting information around.

1) Will xp pro install without any sata driver problem/messing around.
2) Do you have to use raid 0,1 etc or will 4 drives work independantly/normally

1) Providing it isn't one of the first copies of XP without any service packs it will be okay, i.e. XP with service pack 1 or 2 will work without having to load the driver first.
2) The drives will also work independently.

Hi

Sorry t sund stupid but can I use this just as a computer by loading windows onto it?
Please can someone let me know
#34
HP Servers are known for their poor reliability - generally as a result of using inferior components "rebadged" to make them appear better quality than they are.

Unless needed urgently, wait for the Dell Poweredge to go onto promo at approx the same price (£117 delivered) as it's a much better all round machine.

Yep, it should run XP fine.

But you will probably need to add a graphics card, sound card, more RAM, keyboard / mouse and monitor to use as a domestic PC.

With the exception of the monitor, all the other bits and bobs are relatively cheap to pick up.

Thanks for the heads up Sillycib!! ....

So this is the spec I am looking at instead:

Looking good.
You'll also need a sata II to sata II cable to connect you're hard drive, e-buyer look a bit expensive. I've heard good things on here about www.kenable.com, worth a look.
I haven't any experience with home server, most of my experience is with 2003 server.
Home Server does look good though and will probably suit you're needs.
