I have both rechargable and Duracell, I got the 18 from B&Q last week, thought it was a good deal.

I find rechargable AA's slightly over sized, thus when I fit them into the kid's electric toothbrushes, they don't go, too tight!

I put in 1 Duracell and 1 Rechargeable and find that OK.

agreed, these will soon end up in landfill...however some non rechargeables are better for certain applications....i rarely use non rechargeables now...have about 250 rechargeables (mainly in kids toys/remotes)

get rechargeables as someone esle suggested if its kids toys - recommend vapextech on ebay...
AA 16 x 2900 mAh NiMh Rechargeable Batteries Vapextech

Most powerfull AA yet made.

PLUS FREE 2 x AA 2700 mAh batteries
PLUS FREE Fast Charger! 4 1/2 Hours
PLUS FREE 4 x Cases
£ 22.70 delivered
they sometimes have 40 batteries for £30-35.00ish....would suggest a seperate charger that will charge 4 batteries....you wont need to buy batteries for a very long time...years, if ever
im not affiliated, ive used them loads of times...bought about 250 batteries from them (no actua;lly 300ish as my son threw some away when he was very young...eek!!)
non-recharegables are false economy long...also you are in theory adding a little less to landfill this way too

I agree, but these are precisely the applications where the kids don't get through them at a stonking rate - i.e. a tiny minority of batteries by volume. I know you know this - just pointing it out to others who will save themselves a lot of money and save us all a lot of damage to the environment by switching to rechargeables.

Rechargeables also ought to be the same size as non-rechargeables - if they're not, it might just be an unfortunate choice of brand.

I'd take that with as large a pinch of salt as the megapixel figures on cameras. It's a marketing exercise which may well not translate to anything in real use.
