Argos have reduced a number of DVD recorders to half price. Wanting to pick up a cheap unit for dumping programs from sky+ I purchased this item today.

However on collection the item was replaced with a wharfdale dvdrhd400f sporting the same 5335811 code. The product info makes a reference to freeview on the left of the argos screen, but it's not branded on that page as freeview nor does it appear in the category. I was not expecting freeview

The resulting unit has Freeview!. So thats a DVD recorder with 80Gb hard disk and freeview for £60.

Note that this item is now showing as being excluded from the money back guarantee, so you may want to ask at customer services for an inspection before purchase.

I cannot tell if this was a one off or not, but wanted to share this with you!

does it work well, mate?

I have a Wharfedale analogue dvd/hdd recorder and man, the thing is noisy. The fan even kicks in when the device is in standby mode. The other down side is the playback quality. If you record in anything less han top quality, the picture starts to get pixelated.

Also worth notng that if you record in say HQ mode to HDD then you are stuck with that mode when recording across to dvd.

Just my 2c.

The Monkey has spoken.

Very interested in more views on this: from what I can find, that model you quote is a DVD only (no HDD) machine - the one you describe is a DVDRHD400F. Any chance of some feedback on using the machine, etc.?
#4
Sorry it's a DVDRHD400F.

I've only had the machine setup since 8pm last night. Main thing I needed was RGB-in, which it is. Seems fast. Had good success in copying a program off sky onto HDD, cut beginning/end then write to DVD+RW.

You're correct about the quality. Once chosen that's it.
Doesn't seem noisy though.

Any specific questions feel free.

Went to Argos Long Eaton (Nottingham) they had stock of Acoustic Solution not Wharfedale.

The Acoustic Solution ones do NOT have freeview so asked for a refund before leaving the store with it

Please note if you take the unit out of the store you will not be able to return it for a refund as its excluded from the 30 day return!!!!!!!!!

Have to try another store

Thanks for postig planetf1.

Which argos store did you buy this in? It may be just your store or a few which have the different stock.

I made a day of going backward & forwards to argos branches in my area on the prowl for this or the wharfedale 160gig one for £75 - not too bothered about freeview - use an NTL box most of the time anyway.

I went to one branch who had ran out of the AS 80 gig units. So looked at the Wharfedale 160gig machine and bought it. Looked nice enough, but no firewire (that I could see) and no DivX - well life goes on.

Out of curiosity went to another branch - the other side of town - and requested the £60 AS 80gig unit - which they did not have and offered me the Wharfedale 80gig one in its place.

Whilst there waiting for them to check on stock levels, I browsed through the half price catalogue and found item 533/5873 - an Acoustic solutions unit with a 160 gig hard drive. Asked them to bring this one down as well and they did.

Now I don't need HDMI - even though I do have a 50" plasma - component seems to do a nice enough job for me at the moment on my existing DVD player. And neither the 80 gig or 160 gig AS units offer HDMI - which for me isn't a problem... but ... now here is the thing...

I asked to see the 160 gig Acoustic Solutions machine and they brought me a LITEON HD A740GX model machine - a filler for when they run out of the 160gig AS machines. This LITEON has 160 gig HD, DVD+/-RW and DL, but has no HDMI or freeview - again not a problem for me.
The LITEON unit DID come with DivX playback - for £70.

I bought it and sharply left the shop.

Haven't plugged it in yet, but it does like a hefty machine and a nice bit of kit.
Ticks all the boxes for me. (twin scarts), component out, optical & coax 5.1 output , 160gig HD, firewire for my camcorder - will have a play with this tomorrow...

Heads up for anyone else in the market for something similar.

Can you record a channel and watch another with the Wharfedale one?

No - single tuner.
#14
so does the liton have the same argos item number on the sticker as the AS one? is not what is the item number ?

Thanks

No - single tuner.

oh right a bit pants then ! So you have to watch the freeview channel you want to record from ?
#16
In my case I already have sky+ (and media center) so this isn't an issue...

But you're right ideally you'd have twin tuners, ability to watch a third, dvd recorder and 250gb HDD. You'd also be able to stream wirelessly all around the hours, ideally allowing watching of say 4 streams..
etc..

As I said £60... ;-)

But seriously this device will suit some, but not others. It certainly isn't perfect. One thing you can do though is watch tv whilst copying HDD->DVD -- so I can dump 8 hours+ sky+->HDD overnight, cut up in the day and then allow it to write a dvd at data rates.
#17
Looks good.

Ordered one of these for my Dad's Christmas and ordered one of these for mine!

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5335983/Trail/searchtext%3EWHARFEDALE+160GB.htm

I can't get freeview where I'm at, and I've just bought the Wharfedale 42" 1080p TV from Argos (which came with 3 year guarantee - all for £500). Which is very good.

Hoping that this will be just as good.

Voted hot.

Ok took the plunge popped into local argos ordered the AS one and was given the wharfedale. I'm not too clued up about this so sorry for asking again... this receiver i believe has a single tuner does that mean I have to watch the channel I am recording or does it mean I can only record 1 channel and not two whilst watching something else? Sorry for the silly question !!
#19
Sorry forgot to say thanks planet... rep added.

It's not silly...

You can only watch the freeview channel (through this box) that you are recording. However
a) you can watch a program tuned in directly on your TV
b) It seems as if you can watch a recorded program off the hard disk whilst recording from the tuner
#21
Yes the liteon drive did come with the same catalogue number as the AS one.

Just a note about a major failing on the liteon, it doesn't allow you to watch a dvd at the same time as you are recording onto the hard drive.
#23
Managed to get the Wharfdale today, they had both the AS and Wharfdale in stock in Crewe so I just asked for the Wharfdale! Last one too! I'm quite impressed with it, obviously no where near as good as my Humax but at 3 times less the price its pretty good! A freeview hard drive recorder with DVD writer for £60 can't go wrong!

Just a quick question though, it seems to get a little warm when off (standby) at the right side toward the back (where the power cable is plugged in) I assumed it was the power supply but none of my other equipment seems to get warm at all when in standby. Does everyone elses do the same or is just mine, I don't want it busting into flames on me!!!
#24
Not opened mine yet potatoe but will let you know. Have you tried recording yet from freeview, whats the quality like? Also if you are recording from freeview i'm assuming you can watch tv from another source ie virgin media box or sky box?
#25
all the shops near me have the AS one so unfortnately this wont work unless my local stores dont have any stock of it but voted hot anyhoo

I am one of the unlucky ones - I ordered the 80gb Accoustic Solutions model and got the 80gb model, not the Wharfdale Freeview one. :x This was yesterday.

Sorry to be thick guys but do these work if you have Sky then?

if you mean will these record of your sky digibox then i believe its all down to whether these boxes have a scart capable of recieving an input signal usually the scart sockets are output only

just got handed an accoustic solutions, handed it them back, really wanted one as well.
He told me it was exactly the same spec as the wharfdale, until I asked him about the lack of freeview...

Bear in mind anybody ordering these are being checked for TV licenses as well, and if you keep buying/returning them at different stores they are collecting all this.
