I love these "health care professionals" who talk as if getting an appointment at the Doctor is as easy as walking into a Bakery and ordering a Loaf of Bread. I'm sure that the advice given is correct and well intentioned, but away from the internet and out in the real world have you actually tried getting an appointment at surgeries in some areas? or even your own??, at our local one, it goes a little something like this....

1) If you want an appointment the same day / next day, normally you are given a window in which to ring, usually 8AM to 8.30AM, this Window is actually reduced to a cut off of 8.20AM on "training" days, (so please ensure that you don't do something as silly as get sick on these days). During this 20 - 30 minute window, the mad, desperate scramble to get an appointment and the constant sound of engaged lines, is something akin to a "Ring in now and the first random caller we pick will win a brand new BMW" competition on the radio.

2) Even if you are one of the lucky few who get chosen from the switchboard tombola (usually the ones who are ringing from a landline and three mobile phones all at the same time), then you will then have all of your symptoms scrutinised for worthiness by a receptionist. Unless you are currently squirting blood over you living room decor, or holding a severed limb in your other hand, then you will probably be deemed to fall into the non urgent category and are unlikely to qualify for a same day appointment, you will then get tutted at and allocated a non urgent Doctor / Nurse appointment which can be anything up to 2 weeks away.

Why? is the war still on?, is it 2014 or 1814?.

So unfortunately, some people don't use these things out of choice, more out of sheer desperation because the 'right' way wasn't made easily available to them. Fix that first - then feel free to lecture.

No smoke and mirrors - no pack drill.

You're absolutely right, what a top, top comment. Trying to book an appointment at Hanway Group Practice in Portsmouth is almost impossible. The receptionists are the rudest, most unprofessional staff I have EVER come across in any sort of public service capacity whatsoever.

Phone between 08:00 and 08:30, what about those of us who have hard, demanding jobs who's bosses simply won't allow us to sit by the phone for half an hour trying in complete vain to book an appointment.

Modern day GP surgeries = PATHETIC

Why pay when you can get it done for free at the surgery?! Cold.
Maybe because a lot of GP surgeries refuse to do it any more?
Sorry, I live in Scotland, those Tories you lot voted in haven't decimated our NHS yet, our surgeries still carry out routine procedures. For free.
Not in this house we didn't! For God's sake don't vote for full independence up there or we'll be stuck with the bas*ards for ever - it's only the Scottish votes that give us any hope at all of getting anything other than a government run by the nasties!

Please save us from that - or we'll all have to move to Scotland!
Sorry, it's not our job to save England from itself. I think the recent Euro elections made it quite clear that our votes matter not a jot. Oh, and you'd be more than welcome up here, unlike the South, we embrace immigration.

And I gather you guys get free prescriptions and free University Tuition too. That will probably all have to stop in the event of a "Yes" vote....
Nope, why would it?
