Dead format blah blah blah.........

Anyhoo, cheapest I've found for this one.

Synopsis:
Set in the early 1970s, EAST IS EAST, directed by Damien O'Donnell, follows the lives of a Pakistani-English family living in Northern England. George Khan (Om Puri), a proud Pakistani immigrant, and his British wife, Ella (Linda Bassett), run a fish and chip shop, while raising their seven children. George is determined to honor Pakistani tradition by arranging marriages for each of the children, whether they like it or not. When the Khan kids, including the nightclubbing Tariq (Jimi Mistry), the artsy Saleem (Chris Bisson), and the shy, parka-wearing Sajid (Jordan Routledge), begin to rebel against their forceful father, their mother also joins the household mutiny. During an awkward nuptial arrangement meeting with the snobby Shahs and their two unappealing daughters, the family's conflict hits its peak with surprising results.
With his first feature film, O'Donnell convincingly recreates the 1970s setting and carefully avoids glossing over the Khan family's difficulties. Puri and Bassett are excellent as the well-meaning parents, while Routledge is particularly charming as the reclusive youngest son. A quirky comedy that doesn't shy away from tense drama, EAST IS EAST is a truly unique film.

Sounds really interesting, and certainly is not a HD DVD title I have heard of or seen before making it more interesting as well!

Heat added.

I watched this on HD-DVD last night. Superb film and much better picture than the SD version. Really enjoyed it.

for those in the know, its well worth buying this title, this was launched more or less the time HD DVD was announced dead... Great shame, but along with Polar Express on HD DVD it became an overnight Antiquity, its worth a pretty penny. I've seen this along with Polar Express sell for £20+ on HD DVD.

Well worth buying a couple and keeping it away.

there are loads of HD DVD's that are rare and worth a bob or two.

Yes OP. Dead format, blah, blah, blah... £5.97 far too high for a dead format. £3 MAX for HD-DVD.

Voted colder than today's weather.

Hot from me. Have HD-DVD and Blu-ray so not a fanboy. Bought this. Great transfer and good extras. Would rather pay £5.97 than wait for Blu-Ray and pay £15

HOT....id pay 20 quid for this film its soo good lol. Love, set in Salford where I live and can totally relate. Will go well with my xbox HD-DVD player. So fricking what if its a dead format? What difference does it make to ME? I can view it whenever I want...and its HD...and its cheaper....so where...pray tell, is the problem?????

Just noticed they have The Motorcycle Diaries on HD-DVD for £6.97, too - bargain prices for both films. These were some of the last films released on HD-DVD, by the way.

I know that was indirectly aimed at me.

I have a HD-DVD and a Blu-ray player.

I take it you were still happily shelling out ££s for VHS because you'd rather not wait for DVD and pay £15+?

Bizarre assumption you're making there - ok the BR version isn't out yet but how can you assume it'll be far superior to the HD version? Chances are there won't be any difference in picture/sound quality and you get to have it now cheaper!! And the way HD DVD's are going anyway if you wanted to shift it in the future it's extremely doubtful you'd lose, you'd get your money back or chances are even make on it. So yeah, if you want wait 6/12 months for the BR version, pay £15 for it and sell it 12 months later for a £6 quid - nice one!

I agree with ches123. Was just trying to point out was a good price for a good film on Hi-Def that will be cheaper than the comparable Blu-Ray if/when it is released. If you feel the Blu-Ray picture quality over the HD-DVD will be like the jump to DVD from VHS, you are sadly mistaken. I have bought it, I am happy and I cant get it cheaper. Surely thats what this site is about?!

So why vote it cold? It's not like the disks are going to stop working or the Blu-Ray version will be any better - it won't.

What's with the comparison of VHS vs DVD? Totally irrelevent and if I need to explain why, you shouldn't even be arguing the point.
