looks like a nice machine and has got some good reviews , its just a shame that it has no usb support
#2
No +R/+RW playback? unusual, but a decent price anyway
#3
Voted warm because it is a decent player, just doesnt feature the above by the two posters.
#4
Where does it say that is does not play DVD+R/+RW Discs ?

Can't seem to clarify this...

Anybody help pls...

Excellent Quality Machine this. I have the older version, ALBA branded. I teach in the Czech Republic and use mine at least 6 hours a day. No problems in 3 years very hard use, not just playing but forwarding and reversing all the time. Mine plays every disc imaginable - except blue ray and HD of course

btw, a word of warning to potential buyers, the remote functionality is poor in that u have to have the remote facing the DVD player directly in order for the remote to perform the desired action
#7
No problems with my remote - and its exactly the same. Do u have your player in a glass fronted cabinet dickslash?

no...it's not a fronted cabinet...but the remote can be easily changed (as I have done), so this issue is not a biggie...

This is a really good price for a decent (non-Branded) DVD player, but if you have a decent TV, I can't help thinking that it's worth spending a little extra for a lot more.

I bought the Philips 5960 DVD player from Amazon for £39.99 (inc delivery).
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-DVP5960-Player-upscaling-1080i/dp/B000G2Y59E/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/202-3962276-7042248?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1182694754&sr=8-1

This has a HDMI socket (very useful if you have a HDTV with HDMI), it upscales DVDs to 1080i, and, most importantly, it has a USB socket on the front of it.

I can plug in my external Lacie hard disc into it, and watch .avi or .wmv files on my TV. It's turned my boring hard disc "backup" device into my easily-watchable multimedia collection !

It doesn't play HD-DVDs or Blue-Ray discs though, but at this price, that shouldn't be a surprise !

Hope this helps, it certainly would be worth paying the extra £16, in my opinion... it all depends on what you intend to do with your DVD player.

The Philips 5960 seems like a great DVD Player, but does it play avi files via the USB Port.. ?

I only say this because one of the reviews on the amazon site says:

"The DVD player itself was very simple to setup, pretty icons in the menus etc, but a little disappointed that I can only play .wmv files via the USB port. I would've loved to have connected my USB hard disc and played .avi's...."

It does play avi files through usb. They need to be of a certain resolution and divx version though.
