Echostar 500GB freesat+ HD Digital TV Recorder with TV Anywhere (slingplayer) £217.99at Maplin (OR JOHN LEWIS WITH FREE 3 YEAR GUARANTEE USING PRICE MATCH)

dwattsy21dwattsy21

Thought this may interest some freesat users.

First of all, I liked this box because....
Freesat HD+ (can record up to 300 hours)
Includes iplayer (on all Freesat with net connection)
... but best of all, its got a slingbox built in, so anything you save can be watched on any computer, iPhone or Android phone/tab (if you buy the 20 app which I'm sure some people may question) over 3g or WiFi. "so we can watch The only way is Essex on holiday!" said the girlfriend....
Also, you can use the app to remote record.

Now for the deal. It was 350 quid a while ago, but now at Maplin its 229.99. Use voucher code SECRET12 to get 12 quid off brings it to 217.99. I had the Maplin web page and voucher web page on my phone when I went in to John Lewis and they just immediately agreed to reduce it from 249.99 to 217, including the free extra 2 year guarantee

It's a 2 year total guarantee isn't it? Still hot though.

The documentation I have says 3 year, but I was expecting a 2 year one. Either way still worth going there over Maplin I thought

Word of advice on calling them, it goes to their call centre (even if you dial the local store number) and they took my details, said they'd check with the undersold team and get back to me on Wednesday. I didn't want to wait so went into JL Southampton and they had no probs at all. So don't expect an immediate answer from the call centre. Also in the store one member of staff questioned if the Maplin warranty was the same, but the manager said this doesn't matter any more

I was looking for a freesat pvr for the kids' lounge and bought an Openbox s10 HD PVR for £65 (it's even cheaper now!). It is item number 330625571240 on eBay.

Does the job and the tuner is quite sensitive. NO hard disk built-in but I use a 16gb USB stick for recording/timeshift with a cronjob to move recordings to a NAS drive nighly. Can also be used with a USB hard drive (there is a 1tb 2.5" Samsung here for just over £50) so a round £110 for the whole thing with a 1tb drive.

Can also do CCam and similar, if you're into dodgy stuff ;-)

I wouldn't buy this Echostar myself so not sure if it's a good price or not and not voting either way.

interesting about the openbox. I am assuming it's a single tuner, the 2nd F connector being for pass-through?

I am guessing that you can access its file system over the network which allows it to upload its media to your server, or your server to pull the files off it?

John Lewis will not match any voucher codes so the price from them is 229.99 see note I received from them.

At John Lewis.com, we match prices publically available to all UK customers, based on those displayed in the shop, the first price quoted to us over the phone or the price openly accessible on a competitor’s website. We will not match prices only available to certain customers such as negotiated prices, special deals from voucher codes or exclusive offers for groups such as account holders and club members. This means that I am unable to include any special discount codes that can be used to reduce the competitors price.

Correct, single tuner and the 2nd connector is used fro pass-through.

It runs Linux so, with a bit of knowledge, you can do whatever you want with it really. The Openbox streams movies from the NAS server and it uploads TV recordings to the server nighly, so both ways are possible (box --> server or server --> box).

excellent, I am a big user of linux (for work and home), so this sounds like a big win.

I got the same response from the head office, but in store they will be happy to get your custom, so get the info up on your phone and go in to see them

I ended up buying from maplin paid £213 plus got £4.50 TCB- much larger than my grundig box - but it records HD programs without any hassle. Is there a way to fast forward a minute at a time rather than max 40s - that was a good feature on my grundig boix as heres normally 4mins of adverts on the main channels (ITV1 and CH4)

But the sling feature works well and the remote can be programmed for basic tv functions - am pleased so far. Just a week before i get to costco to get my money back on the grundig
