Been looking for a 4+ multi-bay DAS enclosure, the majority of which are well over £100, then I stumbled upon this price at MicroDirect for the 4 bay Edgestore.

Looking elsewhere this seems to have got some good reviews, so I ordered 2 of them as this was much cheaper than buying an 8 bay version!

* Supplied with 2-port eSATA PCIe card and 1 x eSata cable
* RAID levels 0, 1, 5 & 10 & JBOD
* Removable Hard Drive Trays
* Supports 4 SATA-300 drives

Nice bit of kit! I might get one to attach to my HP Microserver and use it as an AOE source for booting the rest of my network :)

Sounds great, does this support the samsung F4 2TB disks? Would there be any air flow restriction, cant tell by the photo? Also I suppose it'll work with a usb-esata converter as my pc does not have an esata port.

It seems to come with an esata PCI card from what I can tell.

Ah, that's no good then.

I'd imagine a USB>eSata converter wouldn't be quite as fast, but have never used one. Can anybody confirm?

I have one of these a good enclosure, and this is a very good price.

It does include an esata PCI-E card.
@Downloader be very careful selecting a USB ESATA card. It will need to support port-multiplier, otherwise you will only see the first hard drive, not the other 3.
@seanyseansean just in case you aren't aware, the esata port on the Microserver doesn't support port-multiplier.

An alternative that I prefer is the Startech 4-bay enclosure. This has USB and ESATA. It also will power down with the pc. More expensive at around £115 Available here , but googling for "Startech 4-bay" will find many other suppliers.

I didn't check for that - thank you.

Do you know if the included PCIe x1 card will fit in the Microserver? I know some people have had problems putting cards in there.

I phoned up Edgestore and the PCIe card comes with both a normal sized bracket and a low profile bracket so shouldn't be a problem. I might buy this to plug into my Microserver though I shouldn't need the bracket as i've already bought a 2 port Startech branded one to go with my Startech 4 bay DAS :)

I don't really 'get' these eSATA multi-drive enclosures. If you're attaching multiple drives to a PC/server, then surely a case which holds all the drives in the first place would be more suitable? As far as I can tell the RAID is still software, so there's no benefit there either.

Not voted either way, because obviously some people see the point in them! Anyone care to explain?

Anyone knows if these/this unit can do RAID5 (etc) internally and supply 1 drive to the OS or will I have to rely on the OS to do so?

EDIT: Silly me, forgot that this will have its own bios during the boot sequence to sort this out. There is a windows (and other?) application to help manage the raid5 array which confused me.
