This is the non Atom old version of the EEE PC.

Whist giving some advantages in speed its main advantage is the £180 deld price.
7" Screen
512 MB RAM (corrected)
Linux
4GB SSD

1gb is about £12 and 2GB is about £25 (price fluctuates)

i was just referring to the mistake, alandarl put 5122MB, tho .5Gb not too bad for an eee at this price

Assuming this is the non-surf version, with the surf version the ram isn't upgradable.

Be aware: the stock O/S doesn't support more than 1GB RAM. Or at least didn't when I was still running it. There is info out there on how to install a custom Xandros kernel that will.

Other thing to be careful of - ebuyer are actually selling the 900 for more than the 901!! If you are after the atom-based eee, make sure you buy the right 90x model!!

Whats good about this. When you consider the opposition this is rubbish. For example, MSI Wind £289 (sold in PC world as Advent) and Acer Aspire One £254.
#8
Well, if someone has a budget of 200quid, then the MSI Wind is rubbish to them.

The MSI Wind isn't really comparable to the 701. More comparable to the atom-based eee's.

Just done further research. The Acer Aspire One A110-Ab Linux version will be £219. The specs are far far superior to the Eee. I take your point mcbazza that people are on limited budgets, but for an extra £39 its a no brainer

Toys R Us are selling this for £179

This is a fair price

I love my 701 EEE (Black might I add looks better)

I've got rid of the installed linux Xandros and installed Windows XP SP3

Gotta say it runs miles better with Windows on it, even with the stock 512mb ram,

I've since installed 2gb of ram (£30) and using a 16gb Class 6 SD card.

Runs everything I chuck at it, have Unreal Tournament running on it, GTA, and more.

Great thing to take on holiday with you, just fill a portable usb device full of music and movies and your sorted, not to mention using it to backup all your digital camera photos from your memory cards.

Battery life for me when using wifi etc is about 2 hours.

Totally agree, the Aspire One is £229.99 from play, minus a 10% discount for me (Quidco, varsity + credit card 1%), it sets me back about £210 which gives me a 9" screen, 120GB HD, bigger KB for an extra £30 - I think it's damn worth it!

This is the problem with HotUKdeals. It all depends what the user is searching for, and therefore, what their question was/is.

If the question is: I need a 'netbook' for no more than £220-230.
Then the eee 701 fits the bill. But, the Aspire One comes out on top as a better spec'd machine.

If the question is: I need a cheap eee 701
Then, this 'deal' is it.

And the trouble with the voting is, people vote depending on how they perceive their answer to either of the two questions.

Also, I could be wrong, but, I can't find any of the Aspire One's in-stock @ Play.com - seems they are released on the 7th.

I agree mostly, but I think that this forum is not about what people want, but which deal out of all the deals is best value for money.

I personally am after a laptop - I don't care which one, but it must be good value for money so between this and the Aspire one (out in a few days), the aspire easily wins.
