1977 is remembered as both the year of punk and the year of disco. At the time, though, it was the year of Fleetwood Mac's RUMOURS and Electric Light Orchestra's OUT OF THE BLUE, two albums that were simply inescapable. But where overexposure made RUMOURS feel somewhat stale and dated, OUT OF THE BLUE sounds as fresh now as it did at the time. This is due in large part to the obsessive insularity of Jeff Lynne's aesthetic. He seems not to be ignoring musical trends, but to be simply unaware of them. Lynne's mid-period Beatles fixation combines with his love of lush orchestrations and pristine production to create some of his strongest music, including the enormous hits "Turn to Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky". However, the autobiographical "Birmingham Blues" suggests that Lynne was tiring of the rock-star grind, which might explain ELO's lowered profile after this release.

What tosh - the mark of a good album is that you can play it forever and it still sounds great, like rumours. The mark of a bad album is when it's supporters can only praise it by slagging off other albums!

But in this case, I'll forgive, as this is a great album.

Hmmm, I'm a big ELO fan but this isn't their greatest album.
Still , for three quid for the remastered version it's a good buy.

Great album, but a poor remastering effort as anyone familiar with either the original vinyl or CD release will surely agree - most tracks simply don't sound right.

'Carbon Neutral'

What a load of bolleaux. If you care about the planet, buy one on eBay, download it or go without.

Marketing ********.

It seems the original master tapes are lost and so they 'remastered' off a copy.

I know i disagree, this is a classic.
Other ELO albums are wonderful, but this is the peak.

from a popularity point of view, their best has got to be either this one or A New World Record from the year before. Though my personal favourite is Time.
I reckon Out of the Blue has it, since it's a double album and the cover was a classic.

My preference is for Time, then Balance of Power then this and New World Record in joint third.
