Cheap and cheerful netbook? Or a waste of money?

I've been holding off on posting this until i could grab one first on Monday ;-)

Far from a waste of money i'd say it actually looks very good...android 2.1 800x480 screen and 2Gb Nand on a nice portable netbook...

Only problem is I can't find any further details of the spec (CPU etc..) Elonex website has no mention of this machine and can't find it anywhere else on the web...

I'm starting to think that maybe it's actually the same touchscreen tablet elonex that is being sold in Asda and Toysrus and Netto have made a cockup with the image....

This is the oneX running android.......that is the websurfer running windows.

nice find op, this is great for folk who just want the net
#6
Maybe its a special they put together for Netto?
#7
7 inch screen is a bit small.
#8
It looks like its the tablet with a separate keyboard.
The specs state 7" led TOUCHSCREEN - so its the same as the tablet.

Keyboard looks attached to me...and it's folded closed like you'd expect with a netbook in the smaller picture....
#10
This looks like it would just be another of those windows CE "netbooks" that are floating around. Just with android slapped on. I doubt they would be much good.
#11
Its going to be rubbish android was meant to run on a phone not a netbook so christ knows how this will work the keyboard and mouse will be a weird setup, I'd avoid this.
#12
Seen this in Netto ad last week. I'd go for a 10" refurb from Argos for £125. The 7" are almost the same size and offer so much less.

Be warned - Elonex customer support is absolute rubbish. I bought a previous Hotukdeals mentioned Elonex Prosentia All-in-one desktop machine back in March. I was very happy with it until a couple of weeks ago, when it refused to power-up. I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to get some sort of meaningful response from Elonex regarding a repair under the 1 year manufacturer's warranty that came with it. There is no answer on their customer support telephone number after the initial automated routing activity. Three times I've given up after being on hold for between 15 to 20 minutes listening to musak. I did eventually get a response to an email where I was asked to provide a copy of my proof of purchase (their website wouldn't accept a product registration at the time of purchase and I was advised to just keep my receipt) and I emailed that over a week ago. So far I've had no further response from them about how I should progress a repair, despite a hastening email a couple of days ago. All of this seems to me to be a pitiful response to what should be a fairly standard query.

looks like the tablet attached to a seperate keyboard but sold as a package, you can buy the keyboard part separately at toys r us for £20 and then it would look similar to the one on the box picture.
#15
its more confusing than that - the separate keyboard @ toys'r'us is attached by a usb cable, and the tablet has clips holding it in the case; this looks like a real clamshell. And the etouch keyboard doesn't have a touch pad and buttons anyway. This looks like a pic of a 10" netbook with an android screen pasted on. And the 7" etouch tablet is 1.6, not 2.1, and it doesn't have an HDMI port. So who knows?

Yep..it's an oddity this one...but that aside the spec looks very good for the money...that res screen and 2.1 means virtually any app from the market will run..making it quite a useful little netbook if the CPU and Ram (as yet unknown) are up to the job...

I think he means Argos Clearance on ebay, if so they don't have any at that price just now cheapest they have is a 10inch MSI Wind (Refurb) at £169.99 + Postage.
I Did try putting a direct link to them but it won't accept an e**y link

I bought one of these last Christmas for my then six year old daughter so she could play on CBeebies and other kiddy website and it wouldnt run them as the graphics programme couldnt cope with the webpages.I tried to contact Elonex to see if there was an update available but they never got back to me.My daughter was heartbroken as this was her main Christmas present so in the end I bought her a Samsung Netbook and ebayed the Elonex. So if you are buying it for someone to play games on give it a wide berth it isnt worth the tears on Christmas Day

I've had two of the slightly older models of these. Please do not waste your money on these. Really badly constructed and slow as hell! Spend the extra money and get a proper netbook with windows xp, win 7 with a proper intel atom processor.. Stay clear of elonex products. Thanks anything for the deal effort mate.

You did not have this one. You are also referring to the fact yours had no flash. Although I assume this does not have flash since it is android 2.1

I wish people actually spoke about the model that's for sale instead of just saying I had one of this brand before and it was rubbish!? It seems to happen on every netbook thread.

Its like Asus netbooks, they do a low end model with 7" screen and linux that is pretty crap. Or they have a 10" model with windows 7 which is pretty awesome... not comparable at all!

Involving Trading Standards should wake them up (just copy TS on a letter to Elonex).

So not this one then. the spec required for running Windows is very different to that needed for Android

Very strange???? I've searched and searched for this on the elonex website even if it was just for a downloadable users guide but to no avail. Nearest I got was a link to download a quick start guide for this one http://www.elonex.com/support/products/Next-7inch-webbook-cews7-5NXT.shtm. Yes I know this is'nt exactly the one in question but it looks very similar to me.

That is the closest i could find as well...although that machine only appears to run Android 1.6 and has no mouse. I think the Netto one will be higher CPU/Ram spec than the Next branded one due to 1080p HDMI out....

I disagree - I think is valuable feedback to hear how peple get on with previous models as companies that sell rubbish in the past very seldomly create something great 'overnight'. It just helps me build a clearer picture along with all the other feedback on which one to go with :)

I'd say it's a waste of money. The hardware won't play anything, the screen is far too small to be useful and the operating system just isn't designed for this kind of set-up. If you give this to your kids as a Christmas present, they will be disappointed. For £30-50 more you could get a fully-fledged netbook.

Once we know what spec this machine is we will know what it will/wont play....but in order to support 1080p output over HDMI then i'd say there is actually a good chance it will play most..... content....Rock Player app will support almost every audio/video format there is and flash is quite simple to install on Android 2.1..as is Firefox browser...

Personally i think it could turn out to be a good bit of kit for the money..assuming Netto get some stock in stores............(stock has been delayed in my local store) :-(

Yeah I've had a call from Netto..if they do get them in stock then it won't be until after christmas now.

I had left details on how this could be very quickly into a very nice little laptop but the post was deleted. This is advertise as a Android netbook, it looks very similar to thae Chinese Apad clones with a Slate and a thin USB cable to a keyboard. I have had a 2.2 slate for a few months now and it is brilliant. If you no where to look on the internet you can add and office 2010 compatible program, wireless printer software and flash support. Netto distrubution inform me that the units are still in Heathrow customs, but should be shipping soon. Most store managers have taken the names of the interested customers who will be contacted in a first come first served manner. To all those people who do not know the difference between a mobile platform and Windows DO NOT BUY, you will only be disappointed, more importantly I have been told I can only order one, I want two units for the kids, so the less people who buy it the more for me. It is not a IPAD but it is a first step into slates, I am sceptical if it is Android 2.1 but if it is it is a bargin.

To be fair Binatone are hardly a company synonymous with cutting edge technology.. surprised to hear they are even selling Android tablets...thought they only made 3rd rate cordless phones?

Most the problems you are having are probably down to the tablet running an old version of Android (as most of the cheap tablets do) one of the plus points of this Elonet machine was that it was supposedly running Android 2.1 (Eclair)

But even Android 2.1 doesnt support flash which is useless for anyone buying this for younger children. I'm and android fan but as someone said before for phones where you expect a cut-down experience its fine but for something like this where people will expect NEtbook like capabilities it may prove disappointing...

Just because it isn't advertised in the android market for 2.1 devices that doesn't mean it won't work ;-)

My HTC desire was never designed to run the same Rom as a DesireHD but it happily does.....
