Saw this in the clearance section of my local Argos. Be gentle as it may not be so hot...but might be useful for someone to pick up on the high street.

I know nothing of laptops, but seems fairly decent spec, triple core, 3gb DDR3 ram, Li Ion battery, Graphics card with HDMI output. B/G/N wireless too. Nice looking machine. Only 250GB HDD but you could add an external one once you fill it.

Next best price I can see is £380 in Dixons/ PC world http://www.dixons.co.uk/gbuk/emachines-e640-06539227-pdt.html

AMD though...

But for this price, what would you get in intel? Celeron DC? Pentium DC maybe?
For the user of a £350 machine, they will never know the difference

Nad_84: true for the average user, it won't matter but for an extra £30 - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/thinkpad-sl-series-378-96-lenovo/839114

This is much better choice.

I've used Thinkpads extensively and find them to be very reliable and durable.

Very good spec, but I understand emachines laptops are a poor build quality so I would not buy this laptop.

cheapest i3 laptop is the Acer 5742 at Amazon - £379.99

edit: better still is the same laptop but with an extra gig of ram at Comet for £379

4 cell battery vs 6cell
2GB RAM vs 3GB
Intel 4500 (does that even do HDMI?) vs ATI Radion

Dont't get me wrong, i would have an intel core ix any day over a AMD, i'm just saying for teh person who spends less than 350 (web, office, photos watching films) on a laptop, this is great
#11
Even though this is triple core its got no third cache so to speak, so theatrically runs as good as say i3-330m

Can someone confirm that The Sims 3 would run ok on this please?
#13
professor yaffle: It'll probably run but won't be blazing. You might need to turn the graphics down a few notches.

Although ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics card with 256MB memory is better than an inbuilt Intel graphics.

You will be able to play it, but only on very low settings. The 4250 is not for gaming. You really should be spending around the £450-£550 mark, if you want to be playing recent games.

core i3 there is always this one http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/shop/technology/computing/laptops_and_netbooks/120987532_emachines_e732z_eme732372g25mnkk_core_i3_2gb_250gb_156_laptop.html?hnav=4294960188

its same price £349.99 I got one for my folks, Great bit of kit for the price, only down side to me was questions marks on build quality

Thanks for the replies, my step daughter was looking for a laptop that would run the game ok but on a budget. Maybe best to look elsewhere and spend a bit extra.
