This latest Emachines wireless notebook has been designed to combine the most popular and useful features with trusted technology. It is powered by a fast AMD Athlon 64 processor and 1GB of RAM, it runs on Windows Vista Basic operating system, and it has a large 160gb hard drive for storing music, videos, photos and all your other documents. The integrated ATI Radeon technology makes video and graphics look great, and the integrated WIFI technology enables you to connect to internet hot spots around the country, as well as connecting 'wirelessly' to the internet from any room in your house, or even from the garden (wireless router required).

The bright 14.1ins widescreen display is perfect for watching DVD movies and viewing multiple applications at once. The DVD-R/RW drive also allows you to burn music, video, photos and other content to DVDs or CDs using the CD/DVD making software that is supplied. It even burns onto high capacity dual layer DVD's. Listening to music and movie audio is enhanced by the notebooks high-definition audio support with two built-in stereo speakers, headphone/speaker jack and microphone jack. Plus, there are three USB 2.0 ports which make it easy to connect popular peripherals and digital media devices, such as MP3 players, cameras and camcorders.

The laptop comes with a fantastic software pack! Including:
Adobe Reader for reading PDFs
Microsoft Works for letters, spreadsheets etc.
NTI CD/DVD Maker and Corel WinDVD for DVD playback

There's a few errors in Asda's description. The processor is the low power single core AMD Athlon 2650e which is fairly slow and the weight is much less. The description says 3 usb ports and the features listing says 2. There are two.

If your up to it you can upgrade the processor to the fairly nifty low power AMD Athlon 4850e (about £50).

Thats because the Athlon 2650e is essentially a low power desktop processor (or at least uses exactly the same socket type) and socket/motherboard takes other lower power AM2 socket processors. So it has exactly the same amount of pins in exactly the right places.

I have not known that.Sorry for the remarks, than

Certainly it would have to work as a desktop only - the 2650e is rated as 15W while 4850e - 45W and the fan would work very, very hard :)

It will be fine for basic use. I'd suggest adding an extra 1gb of RAM. For £300 you can get laptops with much better processors though generally they also need a RAM upgrade (eg Toshiba L300-299 at ebuyer).

You can get a single 2GB RAM stick from Play.com for approx £15 +- a few quid. There's probably two 512MB sticks in there at the moment, so you can take one out, put the new one in and have 2.5GB for a very cheap upgrade. Specs should be fine for web browsing, word processing etc.

Don't even consider about upgrading the laptop CPU unless you really know what your doing, usually the cost of an upgraded laptop CPU can exceed half the cost of the laptop anyway and the performance increase might not be worth it.

thanks for both your replies, buyers remorse is gradually disappearing now.
think i'll take both of your advice and upgrade the memory to 2gb though!!
