I have been looking for a cheap smart plug as I've got an Amazon Echo and came across these. They have been priced a little lower but they were only compatible via IFTTT and now they are compatible as a skill via Alexa. I've spoken to technical support @ Energenie to comfirm.

Gateway required @44.98 so this works out cheaper if you require several sockets https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00V52HTXS/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_5_w

Cold - They require the Energenie gateway to work
No they dont...
Product Description
This pack of 3 plug-in adapters require the Mi|Home Gateway to work, available seperately.
A true whole-of house Smart Home system. Take control of heating, lighting and electrical devices from wherever you are through the user-friendly App or web portal.
Pair the Mi|Home Gateway with your choice of electrical sockets, plug-in adapters, light switches and Smart Radiator valves. Start with as much or as little as you wish, the system is completely modular and can be built up over time to offer you the most flexibility.
Set up takes less than one minute; simply download the App from iTunes or the Google Play store and follow the simple on-screen instructions. Once your gateway is active you can pair it with your devices to allow total dynamic control from wherever you are in the world.
Optional energy monitors allow you to see real-time energy use for the whole of your house, but also right down to appliance level.
Set timers and schedules for your heating, set security functions for your lights, and find out how much your tumble drier is costing you each time you use it.

So pretty cheap then if you require 4 or more sockets

I believe these are only one-way so don't provide confirmation back that they have been switched on or off. Having used something similar from another manufacturer, I prefer the confirmation especially if switching remotely when away from home..

Hmmm that's interesting

Mine is just for Alexa, so I will be using it for voice activation.

I've cancelled my order as I thought they'd work standalone, didn't realise they needed the gateway.

Why spend £1-200 on Alexia and then penny pinch on cheap sockets? You're much better off saving for better ones, as home automation is moving at such a rate you'll only end up binning these for an additional feature in 3-6 months.

they are very much 2-way. the devices report their switch state back to the app

I think you must be confusing these with the more expensive MIHO005 - which is 2 way - these are MIHO002 which have a warning in the description that they communicate receive only.
