Energy saving bulbs 10p instore ASDA.

Was down in ASDA today and seen 11watt energy saving bulbs reduced from £1.00 to 0.10p. There were both types of screws!

Be careful with the ones in Asda, they are not ALL reduced to 10p.
I think the ones that were £1 are now 10p, and those that were £2 are now 40p.
Out of all the dozens on display, I somehow managed to get the 40p ones !

In Stafford there's way more cheap ones in Tesco than ASDA but that might just be a local variation...

Yeah the SES E14 ones that are roughly old golf-ball replacements are 40p not 10p

Theres tons of all types in the Sheffield Handsworth Wal-Mart though.

Could someone fill me in on these energy bulbs as im just curious regarding something. Lets just say you could have a lamp lets say and know how it could state no more than 60w bulb, well just say i was to get an energy bulb and lets just say it said on it only uses power of 20w but gives out 100w could i use that in that lamp or not as its giving out 100W ???Hope i made sense, just typical wife think shes right so have to get this settled lol

the max ratings you refer to for traditional filamant bulbs are typically due to heat considerations and safety limitations.
the higher the wattage of traditional filament bulbs, the higher the heat output.
using a filament bulb above the recommended maximum for an application may damage the electrical holder and assocaited shade / enclosure, ultimately creating potential fire & shock hazards.
the low energy bulbs produce far less heat than filament bulbs, so it would normally be within the original safety limitations to use a 20W low energy bulb (similar light output to 100W filament bulb) where normally a 60W filament bulb would be the maximum. i.e. if the low energy bulb of a specific wattage pumps out less heat than that of the max recommended filament bulb for an applicaion, there is no issue (except the shade / enclosure may fade faster ! ).
of couse, I accept no resonsibility for quoting the opinion of my pyromaniac buddy...

The wattage isn't the light output, it is the amount of electricity used. Wattage became the rough measure of light form a household bulb but it should really be replaced with Lumens now there are so many different types of bulb.

The max wattage you see on a label in a lampshade is as said above to do with heat, so you can use a 100w incandescent or CFL. A 100W CFL is said to approximate the light of a 500w incandescent, but CFL choice in the UK is dire, the largest ones being around 23w and with a terrible quality light output.
