They have an offer in store at the moment where you get 5 energy saving light bulbs for 40p (bayonet/screw fit, 100W/50W). Then when you take them to the till the VAT changes are applied too.
It appears to be a subsidised by EDF Energy

Thats a lot of VAT for something that is 40p! Unless they scan at normal price and discounted at till and VAT is taken per single unit! Does this make sense, either way voted hot
#2
Indeed, it IS a lot of VAT.
Knowing Tesco, they've deducted the VAT chargeable on the original price, before discount!

It is a lot of VAT yes.
I didn't say it was sensible, I merley stated that the offer was available. Make use of it if you will but don't criticise because you have nothign better to do!:whistling:

British Gas give out free Energy savers too.
If your a customer you should already have been sent some, if you haven't or are not an existing customer, express an interest with them and ask for some.

They send em out to you and you can sleep easy at night knowing your making a difference:thumbsup:

That was 4 for 40p, this is a different deal, 5 for 29p
But I've just bought 4 @ £1 and 1 @ £0.35 ( a Tesco value light bulb) with ££3.95 multibuy saving, works out at £0.40 not £0.29. Have I been ripped off?

This was put out last Thursday in Ipswich and was rapidly been taken down when staff realised the offer hadn't yet started and they were only going through as bogof!!!!!!!!!
Lots of old people standing next to the poor bloke trying to dismantle the stand moaning about false advertising and trading standards etc - it was very funny!

What brand of bulbs are on offer? Good find. Thanks!

Both posters made the correct observation that V.A.T. change alone would not account for the stated drop in price and they both offered a reasonable theory for how it could be so; did they actually say or even suggest that you were wrong? No. I don't think that either of them was seeking to criticise you, they were simply pointing out a mathematical anomaly and frankly your comment that they have nothing better to do is slightly puerile. I think you should apologise to them both.
Having got that off my chest, thanks for the original post. Nice one!

I thought the last thing I need is more of these lightbulbs. I have a box full of freebies under the stairs (isn't that where everybody keeps them?).

However I was pleased to find both screwfit and 20w (eq 100w) bulbs which my energy companies never send me.

Voted HOT, bought 5 for 40p from Cheshunt, Brookfield Farm tonight.

ive stopped using energy saving bulbs.....

used them for years but i just hate the horrible light....

went back to normal bulbs and they are so much better......

i also challenge the theory that they last longer....well, in my experience they certainly dont......none of mine have lasted longer than a year and they arent on much either.....

are they more enrgy effiecient? hard to tell, we are told they are, but are they? Ive heard the energy saving is minimal if you keep switching them on/off

i would also avoid the ikea ones like the plague, dull and take ages to warm up

i got 20 for 1.20

I got 10 for 26p. (Barcode # 5 051399 779713)

I just got 5 for 13p of the 20w (100w equivalent) at Tesco East Didsbury, Manchester. Electricity bill arrived this morning so I might even have to start using the wretched things....

LIGHTBULB
5 @ £2.50 12.50
SUB-TOTAL 12.50
------------------------------------------------
MULTIBUY SAVINGS
5 FOR 40p LIGHTBULB -12.10
VAT BACK - NON FOOD -0.27
TOTAL SAVINGS -12.37
------------------------------------------------
TOTAL TO PAY 0.13

Update - tried one of these and quite impressed - warms up quickly and gives off a good light (not too harsh). Much better than ones I've had before.
If only they were dimmable!
