Just light the wax disc with care to have the lantern as open as possible (might need 2 people for this).

guv

Why are they contraversial? Fire risk?

Basically some people say they scare farm animals, produce false UFO sightings:p and having a potential fire risk but the flame only lasts about 20-30 mins and by this time they are 100ft+ in the sky so just remember to let go of them once full of hot air.
I'VE USED THEM QUITE A NUMBER OF TIMES AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM!!

Not good for cattle - they swallow the wire and die

I can't see how you can look at them in any other way - I'm guessing someone found a stockpile of Klan hoods from the 20s and has been trying to figure out a way to sell them off.

"Wonky england flag lanterns! Genius!"

So when they land, isn't this just littering?

It's NO different to bonfire night and new year with fireworks. So YES.

I don't think it's a common thing TBH.I'm sure cattle die through plenty of other mishaps.

These are several hundred times bigger than a firework rocket shell, so there is a difference clearly.

If you are the kind of person that throws empty drinks cans and McD packaging out your car then I am sure that you will have no problem with the litter these create. For any person with a concern for the environment please dont use them, after all would you go round throwing wire loops into a field full of animals.

Completely OTT!!:w00t:
EVERYTHING we do has some negative effect on the environment somewhere along the line.

I don't think they should be sold to cattle if they can't use them properly.:whistling:

I'm wondering if the people who say these shouldn't be used because they post a danger to cattle, also eat beef?

Please don't continue to recycle these old urban myths - it just makes you look rather foolish ;-)

Very true but he does have a point.
People are becoming less respectful of anything that is not in their interest.
Still heat for the deal.
Is this foretelling England's chances?

Indeed they are ;-)

But it's quite sad how they try using the same old "kills cattle" and "pollutes environment" urban myths every time.

It would be nice if they included some factual proof to back up their claims - but they can't, because there is NO evidence - since they are just passing on old urban myths!

Factual proof? Have you heard of Issac Newton's theory of gravity?

It's time to clean this country up and take some pride in it. It takes Bill Bryson to come over here to point this out to some of us!

They kill cattle too? Bargain at 99p

Looks like thanks to all the positive comments on this thread, all 3,429 units have now sold out.

:-)
#35
Surely there is a bigger risk of a cow dying after eating any old bit of twig/tree lying on the ground than there is from one of these possibly landing and then being eaten??

And farmers have been perfectly happy to have barbed wire fences all around their land for years as well....

The lanterns I saw had 100% biodegradeable written on them anyhoo.....they are just a bit of flimsy crepe paper with a very small round bamboo circle at the bottom. Hardly comparable to the 1000's of polystyrene Mcdonalds burger cartons you see discarded everywhere these days.
#36
I made one of these when I was 13

Got arrested soon after letting one go for endangering low flying aircraft!

hot! Was after some of these to take to a festival in a few weeks! People on hallucinogens are funny when they see unexplained lights in the sky :-)
