ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is an unconventional romance told in the abstract, inventive, and comedic storytelling style of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Like his scripts for ADAPTATION and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, this plot works off of a relatively complex idea that is easier explained through language of film than through words. In its most basic description, Joel (Jim Carrey) is undergoing a medical procedure to erase the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). However, while he is unconscious and the procedure is underway, he takes a journey through his mind, reliving moments with Clementine for fear of losing her forever. Using disjointed sound and action, foggy periods indicating Joel's confusion, and flashbacks to childhood where objects appear much bigger than they are to adult eyes, the cinematography communicates Joel's dilemma with visual hilarity. Only occasionally is the film laugh-out-loud funny; instead it is much more deeply and darkly amusing as the absurdity of the situation grows. ETERNAL SUNSHINE is nothing short of brilliant--a credit to director Michel Gondry (who has a topnotch reputation for his aesthetic music videos by artists such as Bjork). Carrey is wonderfully understated in the role of a simpleminded nice guy, and his signature goofiness is used only a handful of times. Winslet lights up the screen with her blue hair and orange sweatshirt, playing a lively free spirit and loose cannon. There are also strong supporting performances by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Mark Ruffalo, along with an excellent score by Jon Brion and a peppy soundtrack including songs by E.L.O. and The Polyphonic Spree. The film's conclusion promises to satisfy viewers; it offers a beautiful metaphor for the end of a love affair that brings perfect closure to this excellent film.

Does anyone ever watch the 2nd disc in special edition dvd's? Personally I'd go for the one disc @ £2.99, not particularly interested in commentaries & outakes etc.

Don't be put off if you don't normally like Jim Carrey (you are not alone). This is a great film

PS. I really hate how the movie descriptions (and the back covers) give so much of the plot away.

I agree but I used to work in a video shop tho and the majority of people will not rent a film unless the entire plot of the thing is explained on the box - preferrably with at least 1 'review' which summarizes that the film is worth watching.

Any film which didn't have those things would result either in people asking about it or it sitting there going nowhere - I guess the studios etc. known this and so offer the information accordingly...

Comments like "How am I supposed to know if this is any good?" were all too common (and answers like "you could watch it and make up your own mind" would have resulted in a shorter period of employment!)

It's always worth remembering that the majority of people in the world are in need of some guidance on how to find their backsides with either hand...

I watch a lot of films and there's very few i can say that i don't like. I don't know why, i just seem to like almost everything that i watch. But THIS is one of the few films i've watched and can honestly say i HATE. It's an awful film that drags out and makes you want to hurt yourself just to stay entertained.

Just my thoughts, i know some people like it (the blind ones?)

How hard is it going through life knowing that people don't share your view of the world - and how long until you realise you can't change that? :)

A lot of people said it was the film of it's year, it won the best screenplay Oscar and has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

eh? I'm not trying to get people to share my views, im just saying what i think about it for those who haven't seen it and want opinions from people who have seen it. I'm saying that i think it's rubbish, others have said that it's good.

What you've just said means that you think everyone here who says they like it are trying to get people to have their view of the world. Also, it's not my view of the world, it's my view of this film.

Did you star in this film? Something's made you take my comments a little to personally. lol "view of the world"? You have a flare for the dramatic. Take a deep breath, calm down and vent your over-the-top stress elsewhere.

I'm with you on this one. This is the only film I've wanted to walk out of the cinema on.

This film also seems to bring out the worst in people when disagreeing. I hate the film, but have no problem with those who love it. Some who love it will attack those who hate it, telling them they're wrong!
