I was a young lad when this came out and was properly freaked out by it - great film.

The budget couldn't even stretch to Laurence Fishburne?

It's years since I last saw n The Mouth Of Madness. I'm gonna have to dig it out later in the week
Movie critics are incredibly sniffy when it comes to horror movies. If a horror isn't something that is either suitably arty or hyped up (read: studios lets them interview the stars or gives them some nice freebies), it's not going to get the reviews.
How much weight should you give Rotten Tomatoes reviews of horror? They rate Paranormal activity 2 and 3 at 59% and 67% respectively whilst other lesser known horror gems like House on Haunted Hill (criminally under rated horror) get 27%. In the Mouth of madness does slightly better at 45%.
There are exceptions, Mark Kermode for example is a true horror fan and I trust his reviews a lot but in general, don't trust critics on horror. It isn't even a case of it being dumb horror as most of these critics have no issue heaping praise on the latest Judd Apatow films.
The visual effects were brilliant and a truly creepy film.
