Yes, there are a few cheap train sets around at this time of year, but they generally have a small locomotive and a few goods wagons. This one looks a cut above, with a larger loco and a couple of carriages.

Initial reduction from £99.99 to £50.00 looks fairly genuine as well - it's £96.87 on Amazon, and the extra 20% off all toys today brings it down to just £40.00 plus £4.95 p&p.

If you can find something else of interest (they have a few track packs) to take the total over £50.00, delivery is free.

It is a kids set basically but a great price

Excellent deal, the best I've seen this one go for previously is about £60
A great starter set, and of course it also comes with the 'Trakmat', which allows you to easily build up in easy managable stages to the full layout design printed on the mat.
To see it in action click here for the official Hornby Video trailer for this set
This set comes with a bigger loco, but lacks the extra accessories included on some of the other sets, which generally as mentioned already, tend to come with smaller loco's and wagons, personally this set is more impressive with the bigger locomotive.
Here is a picture of the included Trakmat...

I used one of these sets as the basis of a layout I built my son for Christmas last year, but as I wanted to design my own layout, and I'm a complete novice I used a demo of Anyrail track designer for the PC, which is preloaded with hornby track pieces, making it easier to do.
Heat added! and I hope the information is useful.

Shame they ran out of the Flying Scotsman sets before today... still one bought for the kids.

Nah, this looks more realistic.

Hi,

I am interested in this for my brother who is 11, he has always wanted the eurostar one but I cannot afford that, would those who have this set recommend it for an 11 year old boy? Or would he get too easily bored of it? Simple controls etc.

Thanks for any help

I find these large loco and carriages a bit boring on an oval layout. At least with smaller wagons and locos they are easier for little hands to manage. These have double bogies which can be a fiddle to line up on the track IMO.

Hot for the price though

Hot deal...Ordered thanks....been keeping an eye on trainsets since the Flying Scotsman deal, this is a cracking price, have some HEAT.

Fantastic xmas deal

I think how an 11 year old woulod get on with it would depend on the child. I go to a train club and some children really enjoy it, 'play' properly and enjoy the modelling aspect, while others play "how fast can the train go" and "can we make it crash".... Mind you , for £40 you are not going to find a cheaper way to find out.

Looking at the Trackmat picture it seems that they've removed the pig from the supplied accessories. Refuse to buy on that basis, cold deal.

Thanks, got one, only 5 left now.

Been watching this for a while, top price! Added a few extra stocking fillers to make it £50 so got free delivery instead of paying £4.95. Saw this train set a few days ago when it got reduced to £50 and they had 100 in stock, last night they had 90, and at time of ordered they only had 6 left! Get in quick if you want 1, they have sold nearly 90 today alone!

Went to get another for little cousin, now sold out....oh well!!

Says 4 in stock but displays an out of stock message when you try and add to the basket :-(

Maybe, but for beginners especially, they are easier to control, as the small locos can get stuck the isolated part of the points quite easy.
I decided to keep to the overall size 8'x4', which is wall mounted to fold down, and basically designed with 2 outer ovals, the outside with a branch off into a hillside (allowing for future expansion!), a passing loop, and a 3 track sidings yard for shunting, adding interest other than watching them go around a loop, which no matter how big, will get boring, so he now has a mixture of small engines like shunters, and larger deisel's, and an HST all in 80s BR Blue!!.The thing is you can add to something like this over a long time, as their interest develops. If they don't get on with, it's not such a huge loss with a set like this, on the other hand if they take to it, they may get interested making model kits of buildings etc, so can be a very interesting hobby, but expensive, hence it's taken 18 months to get my sons layout 'almost' done.

Interested in this and making a custom layout for a young child - would this be a good kit to start with? Would like to make a custom one to fit to an available wall space. Any suggestions where to start planning it and sites for cheap parts? Thanks

Save your money and time- don't bother. The ungrateful little so-and-sos might be vaguely interested for a couple of minutes and would then either break it or wander back to their mobiles.

Just had the following email.....

Dear Customer,

I'm writing to let you know that unfortunately due to stock availability, we were unable to process your latest order and no charge has been made to you as a result.

I realise that this will be very disappointing and I'm very sorry for any inconvenience caused on this occasion.

Kind regards,

No offer of vouchers or discounts. Poor customer service.
.........Further to this comment I had an email to say the product was back in stock. Just rang and they said they will honour the previous price of £44.95 delivered, so I am pleased again.
